Therefore, CPI(M) has considerable dominance on this parliamentary seat. When this seat came into existence in 1962, Congress hoisted the victory flag from here. Purnendu Shekhar Naskar of Congress had won from this seat. But when elections were held here in 1967, CPI(M) snatched this seat from Congress. CPI(M)’s Kansari Halder won the election. Displeasure in Congress due to unilateral announcement of candidate

CPI(M) has announced its candidate for Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituency. CPI(M) has made Sharat Chandra Haldar its candidate from here. Since then, renewed tension is being seen regarding the Congress-CPI-M alliance. Earlier, CPI(M) had announced actor Devdoot Ghosh as its candidate from Barrackpur Lok Sabha constituency and Nirapad Sardar from Basirhat. There is resentment in Congress over fielding candidates from Mathurapur, Basirhat and Barrackpur. According to Congress sources, the CPI(M) leadership has announced the candidates on these seats without any discussion. Which is not acceptable to them. The reason for this is that Congress had expressed to the Left Front its desire to field candidates from these three seats. According to State Congress organization in-charge Neelay Pramanik, the State Congress had taken the decision to field a candidate from Mathurapur seat long ago. The Election Committee in Delhi had also accepted this proposal.

Construction of bridge on Muri Ganga is a big issue for the people here.

Construction of a bridge over Muri Ganga in Sagar is a big and national level issue, because every year lakhs of pilgrims who go to Gangasagar on Makar Sankranti have to face a lot of problems due to the absence of a bridge. Construction of port in Kulpi is also a big issue. Since an Arab company has taken up this long pending project, Trinamool will leave no stone unturned to take credit for it. The relevance of Gangasagar has increased even more in this election season.

Amit Shah has also visited Gangasagar and given assurance of making it an international tourist place.

Home Minister Amit Shah had come on a visit to Gangasagar. He made many promises here. Shah said that if BJP comes to power, we will develop Gangasagar as an international tourist place. Along with this, he has also promised to implement Namami Gange and other schemes of the Central Government here. When there was a stampede here on the day of Makar Sankranti in 2017, Prime Minister Modi had announced compensation for the families of the dead and the injured. At that time the state government had also announced compensation. BJP is also putting emphasis here on its promises of development. BJP leaders are also assuring that the bridge will be built. There is a war of words between BJP and Trinamool regarding the construction of the bridge.

Mamata Banerjee: Mamata Banerjee said, the attack was not carried out by the women of Bhupatinagar but by NIA officers.

The state government has promised to build a bridge in the budget.

There is a very old ashram of Kapil Muni in Gangasagar, who is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. After Kumbh, the country’s biggest fair is held here. Ajit Das, priest of Kapil Muni Ashram, says that if a bridge is built here, it will be convenient for the local people, but it will not remain a pilgrimage place but will become a tourist place. However, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that her government is working on building a bridge to connect Gangasagar Island to the mainland. He said, ‘We have written to the central government to build a bridge on Muri Ganga (river), but they are silent on that too. It will take a lot of money to build a bridge there. We are preparing a DPR for that. The state government has announced funds for bridge construction in the state budget for 2024-25. This 3.1 kilometer long bridge will connect Kachubediya to Lot Number 8. Its construction will take three years. Rs 1200 crore has been sanctioned for this in the budget.

‘Mamata Banerjee: Mamata Banerjee said, there are more allegations of corruption in BJP ruled states than in Bengal, if the Center has the courage then it should release a white paper.

Mathurapur became the stronghold of CPI(M) due to the influence of Tebhaga farmer movement.

Thurapur is located in the Diamond Harbor subdivision of South 24 Parganas district. This area played an important role in the Tebhaga farmers movement. The region was witness to relief efforts by the Communist Party of India during the devastating Bengal famine of 1943, in which farmers in the Sundarbans region were targeted. After the famine, the Tebhaga movement was started by the Bangiya Pradeshiya Kisan Sabha in September 1946, the aim of which was to secure a better share of the produce for the farmers. This movement continued until the implementation of the Bargadari Act in 1950, under which sharecroppers were given two-thirds of the crop produce. Testament to the influence of the movements, the Mathurapur parliamentary constituency has often been a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), established as a Lok Sabha seat in 1962 and named for the Scheduled Castes. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 2,216,787, which is predominantly rural (94%), with Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes constituting 29.06% and 0.53% respectively. The directors of Tebhaga movement were ‘Kamparam Singh’ and ‘Bhawan Singh Chadda’. At that time the sharecroppers had made a contract to give half of their crop to the landlords. The demand of the Tebhaga (third share) movement was to reduce the share of landlords to one-third.

How was the report card of Chaudhary Mohan Jatua who scored a hat-trick of victory?

Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituency was once called the fort of the Left Front. In 2009, Trinamool candidate Chauthary Mohan Jatua broke into the CPI(M) fort in Mathurapur. From 2009 to 2019, he scored a hat-trick of victories from Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituency. But after attaining age, Mr. Jatua has withdrawn himself from the Lok Sabha election field this time. This time in the Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool has expressed confidence in Bapi Haldar, Trinamool Youth President of Sundarban organizational district. Will the young leaders be able to take Chaudhary Mohan Jatua’s winning streak forward? Are the people of the area satisfied with Mr. Jatua’s long tenure of 15 years? Or will anti-government resentment be a challenge for Bapi Haldar? According to political analysts, no one may say that there has been no development in the area in the last five years, but there is resentment among the people of the area regarding many issues.

The growing strength of BJP becomes a challenge for Trinamool

Trinamool has control over all seven assemblies of Mathurapur parliamentary constituency. Even though BJP has not been able to win even a single assembly seat from here, but the speed with which BJP has spread its foot here, it has now become a challenge for Trinamool. The BJP, which once secured less than two percent of the votes, was now in a position to contest the 2019 elections. In the 2009 elections, BJP got only 2.62 percent votes here. She was nowhere to be seen in this election. When elections were held in 2014, BJP also came to power at the Centre. But here BJP’s vote increased only by 2.59 percent. He could get only 5.21 percent total votes. But in the 2019 elections, BJP made its strength felt here. There was a huge jump in his vote percentage. Suddenly BJP’s vote percentage increased by 32.08 percent in this election. BJP came second. BJP got 37.29 percent votes.
