Lok Sabha Election 2024: CPI(M)’s fort remained on Jhargram for a long time, now there is competition between BJP and Trinamool.

Lok Sabha Election 2024 : Jhargram Lok Sabha constituency of West Bengal has been known as the fort of the Left Front. But the poor condition of CPI(M) across the state can be seen here also. At present there is a BJP MP from here. But Trinamool Congress It is expected that it will give tough competition. Elections were held here for the first time in 1962. Subodh Chandra Hansda of Congress won from here. After this, in 1967, Amiya Kumar Kisku of Bangla Congress won. However, in the very next election i.e. 1971, Amiya Kumar Kisku contested on Congress ticket and won. But since then this Lok Sabha constituency has become a stronghold of CPI(M). CPI(M)’s Jadunath Kisku became MP from here after winning the 1977 elections. In 1980, CPI(M)’s Manilal Hansda contested the elections. Making a hat-trick of victories, he also won the elections in 1984 and 1989.

CPI(M)’s fort collapsed in 2014 Lok Sabha elections

Then came the turn of Roopchand Murmu. He won the elections of 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2004 on CPI(M) ticket. In 2009, CPI(M) candidate Dr Pulin Bihari Baske also won the election. CPI(M)’s fort collapsed in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. When Dr. Uma Soren of Congress won the election by defeating Dr. Pulin Bihari Baske. Dr. Uma Soren got 54.60 percent of the total votes. With 6.74 lakh votes, he defeated Dr. Baske, who stood second. Dr. Baske got 3.26 lakh votes. But in 2019 the political equation changed again. BJP candidate Kunar Hembram won the election. With 6.26 lakh votes, she defeated Birbaha Soren, who stood second with 6.14 lakh votes. The margin of victory was only about 12 thousand votes.

BJP’s position continues to strengthen
Traditionally, BJP has never been in a strong position in Jhargram. If we look at the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Nabendu Mahali got only 45 thousand votes. He got only 4.70 percent of the total votes. BJP’s position improved slightly in the 2014 elections. Its candidate Vikas Moodi got 1.22 lakh votes. This time BJP got 9.74 percent of the total votes. But in the 2019 elections, there was a huge increase in BJP’s votes. He got 44.56 percent of the total votes. The votes received were 6.26 lakh. This time, BJP has given ticket to Dr. Pranat Tudu. Whereas Trinamool has made Kalipada Soren its candidate. Sonamani Murmu has been given ticket by CPI(M).

Kudmi factor can change the mathematics of votes

In this Lok Sabha election, Kudmi community is also fielding its candidate from Jhargram seat. They have adopted this method to raise their demands in Parliament. There is a possibility that the political equation will change due to his entry into the electoral fray. It is noteworthy that the Kudmi movement has been going on for a long time demanding inclusion in the ST sub-caste. Neither the state nor the central government has fulfilled their demands. Now he has decided to enter national politics directly. His slogan in the Lok Sabha elections is, ‘Our votes remain ours’. After the Panchayat elections, he is entering the fray with this slogan in front. Most of the people of Kudmi community live in Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura and West Medinipur. Their number in Jhargram Lok Sabha constituency is around 24-26 percent. The number of Kudmi voters in Bandwan assembly constituency is said to be more than 40 percent. Whereas in Gadbeta their number is less than five percent.

Change in electoral equation of Jhargram

Two social organizations have separately fielded Kudmi candidates from Jhargram ST reserved seat. Tribal Nagachari Kudmi community has made Varun Mahato its candidate. He is a resident of Nadia district and has ST certificate. Whereas the tribal Kudmi community led by Ajit Prasad Mahato has made Surya Singh Besra its candidate. He is the President of the Central Committee of Jharkhand People’s Party. He is also a former MLA from Ghatshila, Jharkhand. In support of their demands, the Kudmi community has sometimes blocked railways and sometimes national highways. Bandh has also been called several times. Supporters of Tribal Kudmi Samaj led by Ajit Prasad Mahato, Tribal Tribal Kudmi Samaj led by Shivaji Mahato, Kudmi Samaj Paschimbang led by Rajesh Mahato, Tribal Nagachari Kudmi Samaj led by Anup Mahato are protesting separately today in support of their demands. Running a movement.

In the month of June, Trinamool General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee had organized a program in Jhargram.

But since their demands are not resolved, they have now decided to keep their votes with themselves. That is why two Kudmi candidates are contesting the elections. It is noteworthy that in the month of June, before the Panchayat elections in 2023, Trinamool General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee had a program in Jhargram. There, people of Kudmi community were accused of attacking his convoy in Gadshalbani area. Heavyweight leaders of Kudmi community were arrested in the case. In protest against this, the Kudmi community had decided to contest the Panchayat elections. He did not allow any political party to do wall writing. Was not allowed to hoist the party flag. In the Panchayat elections, independent candidates had won in 1387 Gram Panchayats. Most of them were Kudmis. BJP had performed well in the 2018 Panchayat elections but in 2023 it won only 131 seats. From this it can be understood that the political calculations can be overturned by the standing of Kudmi candidates.

35 percent Kudmi in some assembly constituencies

According to Anup Mahato, they are agitating. In Jangalmahal and Chhotanagpur areas, agitation is being organized keeping in mind the vote bank in the Lok Sabha elections. Except Gadbeta, the rest of the area in Jhargram Lok Sabha center has a majority of Kudmis. There are 35 percent Kudmis in some assembly constituencies. If along with these Kudmi voters, SC, ST, OBC, minority voters also join them, then a new chapter of history will be written in Jhargram and Jangalmahal.
Meanwhile, BJP’s District Vice President Devashish Kundu said that the Kudmis had given candidates in the Panchayat elections. But did not get the seat that way. There will not be much difference in giving candidates in the Lok Sabha elections also. However, the Left leadership believes that the standing of the Kudmi candidate will affect the elections. Jhargram CPI(M) District Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sarkar said that for the last few years, Kudmis have been influencing the elections. They support the Kudmi movement. Jhargram Trinamool District Vice President Prasun Sadangi says that Kudmis are Trinamool supporters. He believes in the development work of Mamata Banerjee. Trinamool had benefited from the Kudmis contesting in the last Panchayat elections.

BJP is turning elephant problem into weapon

The problem of elephants is being made a major issue by BJP in this Lok Sabha election. This is becoming clear in the campaign of BJP candidate Pranat Tudu in Jhargram Lok Sabha constituency. Accusing the state government of failure to stop the problem of elephants, he says that due to lack of proper planning, the problem of elephants is increasing and the people of the areas adjacent to the forest have to live under the shadow of terror. Elephants are also entering urban areas. If the people of the area make him victorious in the elections, then steps will be taken at the central level to eradicate the problem of elephants. Due to BJP’s campaign regarding the problem of elephants, concern is being seen even in the ruling party because there is a lot of resentment in the area regarding elephants. Elephants have been a problem for a long time for the people living in areas adjacent to the forest in Jhargram district. This problem is also seen in Gadbeta and Salbani. If we look at the figures of the Forest Department, 37 people have died in Jhargram parliamentary constituency due to elephant attacks in the financial year 2023-24. Most of them are residents of Jhargram district. Apart from this, a lot of damage to houses and crops is also seen every year due to elephant attacks.

BJP MP campaigning for Trinamool candidate

The current MP in Jhargram is BJP leader Kunar Hembram. This time he did not get the election ticket. It is being told that he is angry with this. In this regard, he had also given a letter to the BJP state president on March 8. He had talked about breaking ties with the party. The same Kunar Hembram was now seen campaigning for Trinamool candidate Kalipada Soren from Jhargram Lok Sabha constituency. But Kunar Hembram also has another relationship with Kalipada. Kunar’s wife’s cousin is Kalipada. But Kunar has not yet resigned from the post of MP. Even the local people are surprised as to how he got involved in the campaign of Trinamool before that. According to the information received, Kalipada had asked him for help in campaigning. On this Kunar said that he will not hold the Trinamool flag. Have left my party but will not join any other party. Meanwhile, Kunar’s wife’s cousin sister is state minister Birbaha Hansda. He said that brother-in-law can definitely go to brother-in-law’s campaign. He has broken relations with BJP in writing.

Jhargram has been witness to Maoist problem

Before the Lok Sabha elections, the Maoist problem in Jhargram was once again reminded. Maoist poster seen in Jambani. It was written in it, ‘Long live Kishanji’. It is noteworthy that Maoist posters are still found from time to time in Jhargram and surrounding areas. There is no certainty whether those posters have been put up by Maoists or not. It is noteworthy that Kishanji died in the month of November 2011. After so many years, tension was also seen before the elections with the poster of Kishanji’s name. It is noteworthy that Maoist leader Sabyasachi Goswami alias Kishoreda was arrested a few days ago. Kishoreda was caught by STF from Simlapal of Bankura. Whether this poster is in response to that or not remains to be seen.
