Lok Sabha Election 2024: Close competition between the wives of Congress and BJP candidates

Lok Sabha Election 2024: Candidates of political parties are busy campaigning vigorously in the Lok Sabha elections. In such a situation, their wives are also sweating profusely. In the Lok Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh, there is a close contest between the wives of the BJP and Congress candidates. In fact, Priyadarshini Raje Scindia, wife of BJP candidate Jyotiraditya Scindia and Priya Nath, wife of Congress candidate Nakul Nath, are campaigning for their respective husbands even in the scorching heat. Without being troubled by the heat and dust, both are leaving no stone unturned to woo the public to vote in favor of their husbands Jyotiraditya Scindia and Nakul Nath. Let us tell you, Priyadarshini Raje Scindia, wife of Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, associated with the Scindia royal family, and Priya Nath, wife of Congress leader Nakul Nath, one of the richest candidates, met vendors in the market, sang bhajans, as part of the campaign for their respective spouses. She has been seen involved in activities that attract the common people.

Nakul Nath is one of the richest candidates

This time, Chhindwara’s current MP Nakul Nath has declared assets worth Rs 697 crore in his election affidavit. He topped the list of 475 crorepati members of Lok Sabha in 2019. His wife Priya Nath was recently seen harvesting crops in a field in Chaurai, which falls under her husband’s parliamentary seat, Chhindwara. She reached Navegaon under Junnardev Assembly seat and danced to the tune of devotional songs with rural women at the Bhagwat Katha Pandal. Priyadarshini Raje Scindia, who comes from the Gaekwad royal family of Vadodara, meets the common people very easily on the streets of Guna constituency. Her husband Jyotiraditya Scindia is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Guna seat. Priyadarshini Raje tells voters in the market and other places how much the ‘Maharaj’ of Gwalior cares for them. People here call Scindia ‘Maharaj’.

The wives of both the candidates are busy in wooing the people.

Last week, Priyadarshini Raje had said in a meeting regarding the Lok Sabha elections that she has been with Maharaj for the last 20 years and has seen how much affection he has for the people of Guna-Shivpuri-Ashoknagar region. All three districts Guna, Shivpuri, Ashoknagar are part of Guna parliamentary seat. He said that during the Covid-19 crisis, Maharaj was worried every day that there should be no shortage of oxygen cylinders, tankers, medicines in hospitals as well as food, water and other essential materials for the people of Guna Lok Sabha constituency. In Chhindwara, Priya Nath, while trying to maintain the morale of her husband’s supporters, is targeting the associates of her father-in-law Kamal Nath who have recently joined BJP. “Wherever I go, my sisters tell me, Didi, never panic, we are with you,” she said at a meeting last week. I ask, is there any nervousness visible on my face? I am not nervous, but I am definitely sad for Papa Kamal Nath ji, whom they (the defectors) betrayed when the time of his ordeal came.

Victory is being claimed by both sides

Expressing confidence in Nakul Nath’s victory, Priya Nath also said that the people of Chhindwara and the Nath family have been together for 44 years and no force can break this relationship in 44 days (before the elections). Bhopal-based senior journalist Shravani Sarkar told PTI that there have been significant changes in the scenario of electoral politics in the last decade. “The common voters are more aware of the issues and are clear about their choices,” he said. They have also realized that public representatives should actually be representatives of the common people. The government claimed that voters no longer respected the elite class as before and wanted a “down to earth attitude”. He said that this time the election battle is looking tough for both Nakulnath and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Sarkar said that Scindia is moving ahead with caution because last time he had lost from Guna. Chhindwara is the BJP’s target as it was the only seat the saffron party failed to win in 2019.

Veteran Congress leader Kamal Nath was elected nine times from Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat and his son Nakul Nath was the only Congress winner from MP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Nath family has won all elections from Chhindwara since 1980, except in 1997, when Kamal Nath lost to former BJP chief minister Sunderlal Patwa. This time Congress has again made Nakulnath its candidate. Members of the Scindia family have won the Guna Lok Sabha seat 14 times, but Jyotiraditya Scindia lost the election in 2019. His father Madhavrao Scindia was elected from this seat four times. His grandmother Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia won this seat six times between 1957 and 1998. Jyotiraditya Scindia has also been elected from Guna four times between 2002 and 2014. In 2019, he contested the elections as a Congress candidate. This time he is contesting on BJP ticket. In the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting will be held in Chhindwara on 19 April and in the third phase in Guna on 7 May.
