When the first general elections were held in the country in 1952, Barasat Lok Sabha seat was known as Shantipur Lok Sabha seat. At that time Congress candidate Arun Chandra Guha had won the elections and reached the Lok Sabha. In 1989, it became Barasat Lok Sabha seat. When Shantipur was a Lok Sabha seat, only candidates from Congress, Forward Bloc and CPI(M) have been winning on this seat. In 1989, Chitta Basu of Forward Bloc won the elections from here. Even in the elections held in 1991 and 1996, Chitta Basu kept winning from here.

Trinamool Congress opened its account for the first time in 1998

In the 1998 elections, the picture of Barasat parliamentary seat changed and Trinamool Congress opened its account here for the first time. Dr. Ranjit Kumar Panja of Trinamool Congress won consecutive elections in 1998 and 1999. After this this area became the stronghold of Trinamool Congress. But in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Subrata Bose of Forward Bloc won the election from here. In 2009, Trinamool Congress had fielded Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar from here. Ghosh led Trinamool to victory by securing 50.96 percent votes. Sudin Chattopadhyay of Forward Bloc came second. He was able to get 38.97 percent votes. BJP’s Bratin Sengupta stood third here. He got only 5.39 percent votes.

Forward Bloc’s vote decreased by more than 11 percent

In 2014, Trinamool again gave ticket to Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. She also won. He got 41.39 percent votes. However, Trinamool’s votes decreased by 9.56 percent in this election. Murtaza Hussain of Forward Bloc got 27.75 percent votes. The vote of Forward Bloc decreased by more than 11 percent. Whereas BJP had fielded magician PC Sarkar Jr. in this election. In the elections held in 2019, Kakoli Ghosh once again scored a hat-trick by winning the election on Trinamool ticket.

Left Front changes candidate for Barasat Lok Sabha constituency

BJP candidate Mrinal Kanti Debnath came second. He got 5.38 lakh votes. He got 38.57 percent of the total votes.
