The Calcutta High Court has started live streaming of the Chief Justice’s court proceedings for public viewing on its official website and YouTube channel. The move is in line with the guidelines framed by the Supreme Court in the case of Swapnil Tripathi Vs. Supreme Court of India Writ Petition (Civil) No. 1232/2017, where the Supreme Court had observed that have adapted to the complexities of the age, yet it is necessary for the Judiciary to keep pace with technology. Judges should consider adopting live-streaming in both the High Court and District Judiciaries in phases commensurate with the resources and technical support available.

It has been told that the High Courts will have to lay down the modalities for doing so by making suitable rules. The Calcutta High Court had earlier allowed live streaming of a hearing in a case seeking entry of children born to Parsi women and non-Parsi men into a fire temple, a Zoroastrian place of worship, in the city. In the said case, Firoz Edulji, counsel for the Parsi Zoroastrian Association of Calcutta, had sought permission for live streaming on the ground that the hearing of the case is of utmost importance to all Parsis in the country and they would benefit from the outcome of the case.

With this historic step of live stream hearing, the public will be able to virtually watch the proceedings of the Chief Justice’s bench and increase the accountability of the judicial system as well as access to justice. However, the rules and notification regarding live streaming are yet to be notified by the Calcutta High Court.
