Mumbai : Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju (Kiren Rijiju) has said that the Narendra Modi government has not done any work that weakens the independence of the judiciary and every institution should respect the ‘Lakshman Rekha’ set by the Constitution. Rijiju tried to refute the narrative that the government was increasing pressure on the judiciary at an event organized by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in Mumbai. Rijiju said that it is a misunderstanding that the government is trying to create some kind of pressure on the judiciary. We are not only maintaining the independence of the judiciary, but are working to strengthen it.

The so-called liberals are spreading misconceptions among the people.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that some people claiming to be liberal are spreading this misconception among the common people, but there is no truth in it. On the question whether the government is interfering in the functioning of the judiciary, Rijiju said in a lighter vein that a question can also be asked on the contrary, whether the judiciary is interfering in the work of the government.

Constitution makes Lakshman Rekha mandatory

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju asserted that our Constitution mandates a ‘Lakshman Rekha’ for every institution and it must be respected. Our government under the leadership of Narendra Modi has done nothing to curtail the independence of the judiciary or interfere in the work of the judiciary. He said that increasing number of court cases is the biggest concern for the country and its solution lies in technology.

CJI promoting online hearing and e-filing

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud is taking steps to promote online hearing and e-filing. Rijiju said that, however, some High Courts are going slow in terms of technology. I don’t want to name it because it would be an insult to him.

Budget not an issue for judiciary

He said that budget is not an issue for the judiciary. He said that the Narendra Modi government has done everything to strengthen the judiciary. This is the reason why the courts in India did not stop functioning even during the Corona pandemic. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, present in the program, urged Rijiju to look into the proposal to change the name of Bombay High Court to Mumbai High Court.
