Diesel engine boats will no longer run in Ganga

With the increasing number of tourists in Varanasi city, the district administration is also facing the challenge of controlling pollution. The administration is also taking steps to stop pollution in Ganga. The Municipal Corporation has ordered all boat owners to convert diesel engine boats to CNG immediately. The administration has also started a campaign for this. Additional Municipal Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation said that a campaign has been started to make the Ganga river clean and pollution free. Under Clean Kashi and Beautiful Kashi, most of the tourists reach Kashi and also go boating in the river Ganga. He told that in order to keep the river Ganga clean and pollution free, the Government of India is installing CNG in boats running on diesel engines. In which out of total 1202 boats registered in the Municipal Corporation, CNG has been installed in 784 boats. Boats which have not been converted yet. They will also be converted soon. For this, a meeting was also held with boat owners. CNG engines will be installed in all boats by March 31.

Private company has been working for 2 years

About two years ago, in Varanasi, the process of removing diesel-powered boats was started on the orders of NGT to keep the river Ganga clean and pure. The work of completely converting these boats to CNG was started free of cost through CSR funds, but at present there are more than 100 such boats whose engines have not been converted. The reason for this is the lax attitude of the sailors. Municipal Corporation officials said that now the work of converting the engine has been given to a private company. The cost of changing the engine is around Rs 50 thousand. The company will have to maintain the engine for one year.

License after survey

About 2500 boats operate in Ganga. Out of these, only 1200 boats have been licensed by the Municipal Corporation. The rest is being operated illegally. There are some sailors whose families are separated and now other members also need a license. However, to earn a living, they sail boats in the Ganga without a license. To get rid of all these problems, the corporation is preparing to conduct a survey from November itself and prepare detailed data. After the survey, the Municipal Corporation will issue licenses to all the legitimate boatmen.
