Kanpur Metro: Tunnel between Central and Nayaganj to be built from September, rail track lowered in tunnel

Kanpur Metro: From the first week of September, the construction of metro tunnel between Kanpur Central Station and Nayaganj will start. Metro officials have given this information to District Magistrate Visakh. The DM visited the metro works from Naveen Market to Bada Chauraha and from Nayaganj to Central Station. During the inspection, electrical and mechanical fitting work at the concourse level of Naveen Market Metro station as well as at the public area and backup area was found as per the target.

Let us tell you that both the tunnel boring machines were doing the work of tunneling between Naveen Market and Bada Chauraha. Saw the preparation of several components of the tunnel boring machine of the Central Metro Station from the ground level to the base level one by one.

rail track in tunnel

Under the first corridor (IIT to Naubasta) of the Kanpur Metro Rail project, the process of lowering the rail has begun in the Bada Chauraha underground station of the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section under construction. An 18-meter rail (track) weighing 1 ton was lowered about 17.5 meters below the cut-out at the station.

In the coming days, about 228 such rails will be brought down, which will be laid in the ‘upline’ and ‘downline’ tunnel between Bara Chauraha station under construction under Chunniganj-Nayaganj section. With this, the process of laying the metro track inside the underground tunnel will start. A few days back, on July 30, the FBW (Flash Butt Weld) plant at the said station has already been brought down. This plant is used for welding of tracks. Like the overhead metro, only ballast-less (ballast-less) track will be used for the underground metro.

Advantages of ballless track

There is no ballast in the ballast-less track. Because of this, they require little to no maintenance. Metro projects generally use ballast-less track on the mainline, as trains run at very short intervals during train operations of 15–16 hours, making track maintenance impossible during operations. .

The stability of the train is better on the ballast-less track and passengers inside the train feel almost no vibration or jolts, which makes the journey more comfortable. These tracks have longer life cycle as compared to ballasted tracks which means they last longer. At present, under the first corridor of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, construction work is progressing at a fast pace on the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section, on the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section and also on the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section.
