Jio Satellite Communications has written to telecom regulator TRAI to allow flexible use of spectrum for satellite and mobile phone service networks.
In a letter to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman PD Vaghela on September 5, the company said technology is being developed that will enable convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks. Therefore, the regulator should consider flexible use of radio frequencies for terrestrial and satellite services.
In the letter, Jio Satellite cited the New Zealand government’s decision to allow flexible use of higher frequencies in the 24-30 GHz band.
The company said that New Zealand’s Cabinet Committee on Economic Development has decided to allocate spectrum in the 24-30 GHz band for satellite and mobile services.
At present, spectrum frequencies are assigned to a particular set of services in the country based on the decisions of the United Nations body International Telecommunication Union.
