The death of two female elephants in Chakulia in two days has shocked the forest department. Forest Department officials now seem to be in a mood to take action against the Electricity Department. Last Monday, a herd of 15 wild elephants had reached near Kamarigora pond in Chakulia. A short distance away, at the other end of the pond-like pit of dirty water coming out of a local rice mill, are paddy fields. Coming out of the herd, wild elephants in number of 5-6 climbed the embankment on the bank of the pond. An 11000 volt wire passed at a height of just 5 feet from the bund. As soon as they climbed the ridge, the wild elephants got hit by the electric wire.

Forest department engaged in monitoring wild elephants

Till now the forest department was rest assured that only one female elephant had died due to coming in contact with the electric wire. The death of the second elephant within 24 hours raised question marks. Some marks are visible on the elephant’s head. Many kinds of apprehensions are being raised due to this. At present the forest department is busy monitoring wild elephants. However, before death, the female elephant was seen passing loose stools.
