E-commerce Policy Data Protection Act – In the proposed e-commerce policy, companies will have to follow the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. At the same time, no provision has been made to establish an independent regulator for online retailers.

PTI, in its report on the issue of protection of personal data related to customers, has quoted a senior official as saying that that area will not be included in the proposed e-commerce policy. The proposed national e-commerce policy is currently in the final stages of development.

Now no new draft will be issued to seek the views of the stakeholders as the Ministry has completed this process. The ministry has to make a presentation on the proposed policy before the Prime Minister’s Office, the official said. There is no plan to set up any regulator for this sector.

The proposed e-commerce policy will take into account the interests of all stakeholders such as investors, manufacturers, MSMEs, traders, retailers, startups and consumers.

The government is also in the process of making consumer protection rules for this sector. Its objective is that the policy should work with consumer protection rules and not be in conflict with each other.
