Iran attacks in northern Iraq and Syria, tension increases

Iran struck an “espionage headquarters and a gathering of anti-Iranian terrorist groups” shortly after the missile attacks on an area near the US Consulate in Erbil. Iran gave this information on Monday. The Security Council of the Kurdish regional government said in a statement that four civilians were killed and six people were injured in the attacks. According to a post shared on the social media platform ‘X’ by former Iraqi MP Mashan al-Jabouri, one of the attacks killed prominent local businessman Peshra Dizai and his family members. He said a missile fell on Dizai’s “palace which is next door to my house.” Several other regional political figures in Iraq have also confirmed Dizai’s death.

Soon after, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said in a statement carried by state media that it had attacked “terrorist activities” in Syria, including Islamic State targets, and destroyed them by firing multiple ballistic missiles. Another statement claimed that it attacked the headquarters of Israeli intelligence agency Mossad in the Kurdish region of Iraq. The Islamic State terrorist organization claimed responsibility earlier this month for two suicide bombings targeting an event organized in memory of an Iranian general killed in a 2020 US drone strike. At least 84 people were killed and 284 others were injured in the attack on a ceremony organized in honor of Revolutionary Guard General Qassem Soleimani.

Accused of killing Iranian General Seyed Razi Mousavi

Iran has accused Israel of killing a high-ranking Iranian general, Seyed Razi Mousavi, in an airstrike in the Damascus neighborhood. A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the US monitored the missiles that fell in northern Iraq and northern Syria and that no American installation was affected or damaged in these attacks. Iran claimed responsibility for a missile attack near the US Consulate complex in Erbil in 2022, saying that the attack was carried out in revenge for an Israeli attack in Syria in which two members of its Revolutionary Guard were killed.
