India’s first Republic Day ceremony was held in this stadium, not Rajpath.

Republic Day Celebration: India is celebrating its 75th Republic Day today. Thousands of guests attended the function organized at Dutva Path in Delhi. Many tableaux were also taken out on the duty path in which 16 states, contingents of the three armies and many other parties were present. Today, when the country has completed 74 years of becoming a republic, then if we discuss how India celebrated its first Republic Day, then you might not believe it. Let us tell you that after India became the Republic, the first ceremony was not organized on Rajpath (now Duty Path).

The event was held in this stadium, not Rajpath

Yes, India did not organize its first Republic Day main function at Rajpath but in a stadium. According to reports, this event was held in an amphitheater of the 1930s which was later converted into a stadium. On that day i.e. January 26, 1950, when India became a Republic, the public buildings, gardens and railway stations of the capital were dazzled with lights that night. On this historic day, Rajendra Prasad took oath as the first President of India and the first Republic Day ceremony was held here at Irwin Stadium.

Stadium built in 1933

According to the Google Arts and Culture website, the stadium was built in 1933 as a gift to Delhi from the Maharaja of Bhavnagar. It was named after the former Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin, who during his tenure made New Delhi the new capital of British rule in February 1930. Robert Tor Russell, the architect of Connaught Place in central Delhi, designed this amphitheater, which was named the National Stadium just before the Asian Games were held in 1951. At the same time, in the year 2002, it was named after hockey magician Major Dhyan Chand.
