Cyber Crime: India ranks 10th in terms of cyber crime. In cases of cyber crime, fraud for making advance fee payment is the most common thing. This information has come to light in a new study that surveyed cyber crime experts from around the world.
An international team of researchers has compiled the World Cyber Crime Index, which ranks nearly 100 countries and identifies leading locations according to different categories of cyber crime. These categories include ransomware, credit card theft and scams.

According to research published in the journal ‘Plos One’, Russia tops the list followed by Ukraine, China, America, Nigeria and Romania. North Korea ranked seventh, while Britain and Brazil were ranked eighth and ninth respectively.
The key categories the researchers identified included technology products and services such as malware; attacks and extortion, including ransomware; hacking and data theft, including credit card; Scams like advance fee fraud and money laundering etc.

The survey team received 92 complete survey responses. The researchers found that the top six countries were among the top ten countries under each cyber crime category. The authors wrote in the study, incidents of technical cyber crime are higher in Russia and Ukraine, while Nigerian cyber criminals engage in less technical forms of cyber crime.
According to the study, India was found to be ahead in terms of scams. Apart from this, more cases of technical crimes were reported in Romania and America. Study co-author Miranda Bruce is from the University of Oxford, Britain. We now have a deeper understanding of the geography of cyber crime, he said, and how different countries specialize in different types of cyber crime.
