Independence Day: Khan Bahadur Khan gave freedom to Bareilly in the first revolution, 257 revolutionaries were hanged

Independence Day: Independence Day is being celebrated in the country on the 76th anniversary of independence. Khan Bahadur Khan of Bareilly along with his revolutionaries had given freedom to the country earlier also. However, this freedom lasted for about 10 months and 5 days. Bareilly had become free from the British rule. But, on May 6, 1858, the British once again captured Bareilly. The revolutionaries were arrested and prosecuted.

After this, on 24 February 1860, Khan Bahadur Khan was hanged in the old Kotwali, while 257 revolutionaries were hanged on the banyan tree of the Commissionerate. The impression of revolution was visible on every branch and leaf of this banyan tree. This tree has fallen, but the martyr’s pillar standing in its roots reminds us of the revolution. The revolutionaries of Rohilkhand had participated in the biggest way in the war of Jang-e-Azadi.

This city was a big stronghold of revolutionaries. In the war of 1857, under the leadership of Khan Bahadur Khan, freedom fighters fought against the British by tying a shroud on their heads. All the signs of independence are still present in Bareilly. There was also a banyan tree of a commissionerate in it. 257 freedom fighters were hanged by hanging from a tree. The martyr’s pillar built in the commissionerate testifies to this fact. This Martyr Pillar reminds us of the sacrifices of the revolutionaries in the independence of the country.

The bugle of independence was blown from Ruhilkhand

The bugle of Jang-e-Azadi was blown in 1857. At that time, the entire Ruhelkhand including Bareilly was burning in the fire of revolution, then Pandit Shobharam along with Ruhela Sardar Khan Bahadur Khan and all the revolutionaries came out on the streets carrying the fire of revolution. These revolutionaries shook the foundation of the British government. Because of which the British government arrested all the revolutionaries on 6 May 1858.

Khan Bahadur Khan was buried in Bareilly’s old jail

The fear of the British did not end even after hanging Ruhela Sardar Khan Bahadur Khan. He was afraid that people might start worshiping at the place where Khan Bahadur Khan was hanged. That’s why the British had buried Khan Bahadur Khan in the old district jail along with the fetters. After a lot of effort, in 2007, the grave of Khan Bahadur Khan was taken out of the jail and freed.

Khan Bahadur Khan was a descendant of Ruhela Sardar

Khan Bahadur Khan Ruhela, who played the bugle of revolution in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, was the grandson of Sardar Hafiz Rahmat Khan. He was born in 1791, after the death of his father Zulfikar Ali Khan, he settled in Bhud locality of Bareilly. He was also a Sadar Judge in the British Government.
