There are different styles and traditions of celebrating birthdays in many countries of the world.

Mexico: Celebrating birthday by bursting a pinata

Here, whoever has a birthday, he bursts a pinata i.e. a big colorful container inflated like a balloon, blindfolded and by hitting it with a stick. A lot of toffees or miniature toys fall from it, so everyone together loots them. Traditionally this pinata was made from clay and was round in shape, but nowadays it is also made from thick paper. Now it is not just made circular but is made in different shapes and types. It can also be like any animal or cartoon character. Here instead of singing Happy Birthday to You, people sing Mananitas (i.e. Little Morning) songs. This song is from the 16th or 17th century.

New Zealand: Birthday with bread and butter

Here, fairy bread is definitely brought or made at home on the first birthday of a child. It is a slice of ordinary bread, spread with butter and sprinkled with toffee shavings and crumbs. Also, balloon decorations are done all around. Barbeque fire, celebration and food and drink are prominent in the later birthday celebrations. When the child becomes an adult on his 21st birthday, in many places in New Zealand and Australia he is given the keys of the house as a symbol.
