Yogi government will close the cuts made illegally

According to media reports, the Uttar Pradesh government has reportedly taken cognizance of road accidents occurring in the state due to illegally constructed cuts on national highways. According to the report of news agency ANI, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to close all illegal cuts on national highways in the state to prevent accidents.

Instructions given to District Magistrates

It has been said in the report that Yogi Adityanath’s government has instructed all the district magistrates of Uttar Pradesh to immediately stop all such cuts. The report also states that the UP Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has directed state officials to regularly monitor illegal cuts after closure to avoid their recurrence on national highways.

Illegal cuts invite road accidents

India has a large network of roads and a large part of them are national highways, where an alarmingly large number of road accidents occur every year. In fact, India is one of the leading countries in the world in terms of road accidents and the high number of deaths and serious injuries. Violation of traffic rules is a major reason behind fatal road accidents. At the same time, unauthorized cuts or faulty road design also play an important role in major accidents. Unauthorized cuts on national highways pose a risk of major accidents, sometimes involving school buses. With the order to close illegal cuts on national highways, the Uttar Pradesh government is reportedly aiming to reduce road accidents and their resulting deaths in the state.

Amendment in UP motor vehicle rules

The report further said that in a meeting of the Vested Legislative Committee (Prathit Vidhan Samiti) of the UP State Assembly on November 20, 2023, amendments to the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicle Rules for the operation of school vehicles were discussed. The committee expressed serious concern over the high number of accidents occurring in the state allegedly due to illegal cuts on national highways and urged the authorities to direct the concerned departments and officers to immediately close all such illegal cuts.
