Charge the battery from another car by parking nearby
To jump start your car’s battery on the highway, you will need another fully charged car. The driver of that car must have jumper cables. If these two things are found, then you should park your car near another car in such a way that the batteries of both are facing each other. After this, charge your car’s battery by connecting jumper cables to the battery of another car. Remember that there should be such a distance between these two cars that they are not adjacent to each other.
Locate the batteries and their terminals
The batteries of most cars are installed in the engine compartment. However, the batteries of some cars are installed in unusual places. The batteries installed in the engine compartment are not easy to access. In such a situation, it is very important for you to locate the batteries and their terminals. Plus-minus marks will be found on the terminals of the battery. Now check the colors of the wires connected to the terminals. A red wire is connected to the plus terminal, while a black wire is connected to the minus terminal. The clamps of jumper cables are also color coded in red and black. You also have to connect the wires of the jumper cable accordingly.
Connect jumper cables to battery terminals
First of all, switch off the ignition of the fully charged car. After this, take one end of the cable and connect the red end to the positive terminal of the discharged battery. Take the black clamp and place it on the ground or on a plastic part. Keep in mind that both the cars are not touching any metal part. Now, take the other end of the jumper cable and connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery. Then, connect the black clamp to the minus terminal of the battery. When doing this, take care that none of the four clamps of the jumper cables are touching each other. Next, find a bare, unpainted piece of metal under the hood of the car with the discharged battery and attach the remaining black clamp to it.
Start the engine of a charged car
Start the car engine with a good battery and let it idle for two or three minutes. This will help in charging the dead battery. Now, try to start the car with a dead battery. If it doesn’t start immediately, turn the key off and let the other car idle for 10-15 minutes. After this, try to start the car with dead battery again. After this your car will start and become driveable.
Disconnect jumper cables
If the jump-start procedure has worked and your car starts, leave it running. By doing this the car engine will be able to charge the battery itself. Now, carefully disconnect the jumper cables. For this, first of all remove the negative clamp from the bare metal connection under the hood of the car. Then remove the red clamp from the plus terminal and do not let the clamps touch each other. Separate them from the clamps and place them on the ground. Now, remove the red clamp from the good battery and then remove the black clamp.
