ICC withdrew the suspension of Sri Lankan cricket, had to lose hosting of Under-19 World Cup

International Cricket Council (ICC) Has lifted the suspension of Sri Lankan cricket with immediate effect. The ICC said that the country’s cricket body is no longer violating the membership obligations of the global body. Due to this suspension, Sri Lanka lost the hosting of the currently ongoing Under-19 Men’s World Cup. The ICC had suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket Board with immediate effect in November during the ODI World Cup due to government interference and Under-19 World Cup The hosting was also snatched away. The COVID-19 World Cup is currently being played in South Africa.

Suspension lifted with immediate effect

A statement issued by the ICC said that the International Cricket Council Board has today lifted the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect. The Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and is now satisfied that SLC is no longer in breach of its membership obligations. Sri Lanka’s ICC membership was suspended due to government interference on 10 November after the Sri Lankan Sports Ministry dismissed the SLC board and replaced it with an interim committee.

Upul Tharanga became the chairman of the selection committee

After reinstating its dismissed members in December 2023, Sri Lanka appointed a new selection committee headed by former opening batsman Upul Tharanga. Tharanga was appointed as the chairman of the 5-member selection committee. He has been nominated to this post for two years. Former cricketers Ajantha Mendis, Indika De Saram, Tharanga Paranavitana and Dilruwan Perera are the other four selectors.

Sri Lanka Board was reinstated in December

After the suspension of the ICC, the Sri Lankan government woke up and Sports Minister Harin Fernando reinstated the dismissed members of the board in December. After the suspension, ICC was keeping a special eye on the Sri Lankan cricket administration. On which many allegations of corruption and mismanagement have been made in the last few years. Sri Lanka’s performance in the ODI World Cup held in India last year was disappointing and selection issues were in the news during their poor performance.
