What is Intelligence Bureau?

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is the internal security and counter-intelligence agency of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was established in 1887 as the Central Special Branch, and is considered to be the oldest such organization in the world.

Until 1968, it handled both domestic and foreign intelligence after which the Research and Analysis Wing was formed specifically for foreign intelligence; After that, the IB was primarily entrusted with the role of domestic intelligence and internal security. Current IB Director Tapan Deka took over from Arvind Kumar on 24 June 2022.
