Hydrogen fuel plant inaugurated in Jamshedpur

The country’s first hydrogen fuel plant was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Tata Motors Company campus in Jamshedpur. Spread over approximately seven acres, this plant is a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Cummins, Tata Motors and America-based Cummins Inc. Cummins and TML have set up a new business entity called TCPL Green Energy Solutions Private Limited (GES), a wholly owned subsidiary under the joint venture.

The agreement was signed on 25 August 2023

The Jharkhand government had signed an agreement with TCPL Green Energy Solutions Private Limited (TCPL GES) to set up a hydrogen fuel project on August 25, 2023. To be set up with an investment of approximately Rs 354.28 crore, this plant will have the capacity to manufacture more than 4,000 hydrogen internal combustion engines, fuel agnostic engines and more than 10,000 battery systems.

The company aims to achieve zero emissions in commercial vehicles by 2045. The company is committed to providing cargo and emission free and commercially viable solutions to its customers.

Importance of the project

The Indian government is encouraging the use of green hydrogen as a fuel in the transportation sector, so that the consumption of fossil fuels like petrol or diesel can be reduced. The government aims to make India carbon neutral by 2070 in which green hydrogen will play a major role.
