Jogpal (28), a resident of Bhattu Kalan village, said that he has been catching snakes for almost a decade, which enter people’s homes or other places in rural areas. Jogpal claimed that he has saved more than 5,600 snakes and has been bitten by snakes 10 times so far.

He said, “Recently I caught a baby snake in an open area near the venue of the Independence Day celebrations in Fatehabad district, where the chief minister was about to hoist the national flag.” Jogpal said that he also rescued several snakes that had taken shelter on trees due to water-logging in many areas due to the recent floods. He told that all the snakes caught are released in the forests. Jogpal said, “I have been rescuing snakes for more than 10 years. Most of them are snakes that enter people’s homes and gardens in villages.”

Where did you get the inspiration to save snakes?

When asked where did he get the inspiration to save snakes, he said that when he was about 17 years old, a snake had entered his house in the village. He told that when the neighbors and other people who reached there were trying to kill the snake, then he was persuading the people not to kill the snake. Jogpal said, “I tried to save him, but in the meantime someone attacked the snake and killed him. That incident left a deep impression on me. Later, I started watching Discovery Channel. At first, I Started saving small snakes. I read many books about it and collected information about snakes.

‘Can catch snakes easily’

He said, “Now, I can catch snakes easily. So far, I have rescued more than 5,600 snakes. I have been bitten by snakes 10 times, including a snakebite. Had to be hospitalized for days.” He told that he saves every reptile and bird he finds in an injured state. Jogpal told, “People call me and I reach there with my team. We catch snakes and release them in the forests.”

Jogpal said that there are three more people in his team who work for him. “We carry special gloves, sticks, shoes, hooks and other safety equipment with us,” he said. He told that the Fatehabad district administration has appreciated and honored him and his team for social service. Jogpal said, “Initially, when I started rescuing snakes and started doing it as a full-time job, my family used to forbid me to do so. But now they have no problem with it.”

Trying to make people aware about snakes

Jogpal told that he also tries to make people aware about snakes. He said, “In our area, people no longer kill snakes. If they see a snake, they call me and we rescue it. I tell people that snakes only attack in self-defense, when They feel their lives are in danger.”
