Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi has written a letter to the Union Home Secretary demanding deployment of four additional companies of paramilitary forces to maintain law and order in Malik Ka Bagicha area. It is known that on Thursday, local people pelted stones and threw petrol bombs at Municipal Corporation employees and police, due to which many policemen had to take shelter in a police station, which was set on fire by the mob. Seven people, including a journalist, were treated in three hospitals on Friday. The condition of three of them was said to be critical.

There will be a magistrate inquiry into the violence

On Saturday, orders were given to conduct a magistrate’s inquiry into the riots that took place on February 8 after the demolition of an illegal madrasa. On Thursday, a mob indulged in arson and vandalism in Banbhulpura area to demolish an illegal madrasa. Police said that they have started searching for the builder Abdul Malik. The order issued by Chief Secretary Radha Raturi said that Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat will conduct a magisterial inquiry and submit his report to the government within 15 days.

Police said that internet services remained suspended in the city to prevent the spread of rumors through social media platforms. Police patrolled the affected areas and there was silence on the streets. Shops and schools remained closed. Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prahlad Meena said that so far three FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence and five people have been arrested.

Curfew limited to Banbhulpura

Nainital District Magistrate Vandana Singh on Saturday issued an order to limit the curfew to Banbhulpura. It has been said in the order that the curfew will now be limited to the entire Banbhulpura area which includes the area around the perimeter of Army Cantonment (including Workshop Line)-Tikonia-Tinpani and Gaulapar Bypass. There will be no restrictions on vehicular movement and commercial establishments on Nainital-Bareilly Motor Road. However, only hospitals and medicine shops will remain open in those areas where curfew is in force.

According to officials, six rioters were killed and more than 60 people were injured in the violence on Thursday. Regarding those killed in the violence, the SSP said that no one died in police firing and the circumstances of their death will become clear after the postmortem. He said that the police opened fire following the magistrate’s order to disperse the crowd.
