Government in action mode on DeepFake, provision of FIR-fine-jail, 7 days deadline for social media platforms

Constant meetings are being held to find ways to curb this infamous technique and efforts are being made to make strict rules. The latest update is that Union Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar said that an FIR will be registered against the person sharing the post. If the person sharing such a video reveals where the post came from, a case will be registered against the person who posted the content. He said that social media platforms have been given seven days to bring their terms of use in line with IT rules. Rajeev Chandrashekhar said that from now onwards violation of IT rules will not be tolerated at all (zero tolerance).

The Central Government has taken many strict steps regarding cyber security and deepfakes. Under this, the IT Ministry recently organized a meeting in which all the big social media giants participated. The purpose of this meeting was based on solving the problem caused by deepfakes. Now IT Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar has also presented his views on this.

Ministry will create website, users will be able to complain about rule breakers

After meeting social media companies, he said that officers will be appointed to ensure action against deepfake content. Rajiv Chandrashekhar said that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will develop a website on which users can raise their concerns regarding violation of IT rules. The Union Minister said that the IT Ministry will provide assistance to users in informing them about violations of IT rules and filing FIRs.

It has also been said by the government that if any such content is reported, it should be removed within 36 hours of reporting and prompt action should be ensured within the time limit prescribed under IT Rules 2021. The minister said that the government is committed to ensuring security and trust for Indians in the digital sector. Along with this, the Center said that there is a provision of a fine of Rs 1 lakh and a stringent punishment of three years in jail for the creation and dissemination of deepfakes.
