Government forms committee to draft guidelines on unwanted calls

The government on Thursday said it has formed a committee to draft guidelines to address the problem of unwanted or promotional calls. These types of calls not only violate the privacy of users but also the rights of consumers. This decision was taken in a meeting held here on February 14 under the chairmanship of Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh. Issues related to unwanted/advertising commercial calls were discussed in the meeting.

“The Department of Consumer Affairs has constituted a committee to address the problem of unwanted/promotional commercial calls being received by consumers…” an official statement said. Includes members of representative and regulatory bodies. This committee will prepare draft guidelines.

Regulatory bodies include the Department of Telecommunications (DOT), Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Reserve Bank of India, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI), Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and Cellular Operators Association of India (CAOI). COAI) are included.

“It was observed that these calls not only violate the privacy of users but also the rights of consumers,” the statement said. Most of such calls come from the financial services sector. After this comes real estate.” It was also told in the meeting that those making ‘spam calls’ are now adopting internet calls. They are specifically using WhatsApp to offer customers Ponzi schemes, investments in crypto, and job opportunities.

“During the meeting, it was observed that all telemarketing companies from various sectors such as banks and financial services, real estate, e-commerce platforms and other commercial entities have already been advised to stop their phone calls,” the statement said. Get the 140 number series before the number so the consumer can identify the caller.

This gives customers control over what type of calls or messages they want to receive. Many unregistered telemarketing companies do not follow these provisions. It was said in the meeting that all telemarketing companies should strictly comply with these provisions. Representatives of Department of Telecommunications, TRAI, COAI, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Vodafone, Airtel and Reliance attended the meeting.
