Gold worth Rs 2.18 crore seized in joint operation of BSF, DRI and police against smugglers, eight arrested

Kolkata, Amit Sharma: Border Security Force (BSF), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and State Police based in Nadia India-Bangladesh border During the joint operation conducted for two days in the adjoining areas, 26 gold biscuits, eight gold bangles, one pistol, three cartridges, 69 bottles of Phensedyl and about two kilograms of ganja were seized. Eight smugglers were also arrested during the operation, of which five were women. Their names are Amit Biswas, Archana Ghosh, Sumitra Khan, Suman Biswas, Jayshree Pramanik, Rita Pramanik, Vimal Biswas, and Subhadra Biswas, all residents of Vijaypur village in Nadia. The weight of the seized gold is approximately 3.52 kg, whose value is estimated to be around Rs 2.18 crore. The arrested smugglers had smuggled gold and pistols from Bangladesh to India, while they were trying to smuggle Phensedyl and Ganja into Bangladesh.

On November 30, the 32nd battalion of BSF had come to know from informers that a large quantity of gold had been smuggled from Bangladesh in the village Vijaypur area adjacent to the India-Bangladesh border. BSF shared this information with DRI and Krishnaganj police station, after which a joint operation was conducted in Vijaypur area. During the operation, a house located in the border village was raided, from where 24 gold biscuits and eight bangles were seized. Amit Biswas and two women Archana Ghosh and Sumitra Khan were arrested from the spot. The operation continued even into the night and during this time a person named Suman Vishwas was caught with two gold biscuits while trying to escape from the house.

The seized gold and four smugglers have been handed over to DRI (Kolkata), while the pistol, magazine, cartridges, Phencidyl and four other accused have been handed over to Krishnaganj police station. DIG AK Arya of BSF (South Bengal Frontier) said that to stop cross-border smuggling, various agencies share information with each other and on the basis of that they run operations and try to catch the criminals. He said that gangs of smugglers trap poor and innocent people living in the villages adjacent to the international border by luring them with money and use them to fulfill their plans. BSF’s campaign against smugglers will continue.
