India announced ‘Global Biofuel Alliance’ on Saturday. This alliance was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit. On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi appealed to increase the blending of ethanol in petrol to 20 percent at the global level and urged the G20 countries to join this initiative.

PM Modi said that today the need of the hour is that all countries should work together in the field of fuel blending. Our proposal is to take a global initiative to take ethanol blending in petrol to 20 percent. Many global leaders including US President Joe Biden, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Italy’s Prime Minister were present on the occasion.

While addressing the ‘One Earth’ session, Prime Minister Modi also proposed to launch ‘G20 Satellite Mission for Environment and Climate Observation’. He also urged G20 leaders to start work on the ‘Green Credit’ initiative. Modi made this suggestion in the presence of global leaders including US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the G20 Leaders’ Summit at the Bharat Mandapam International Conference Center here. Modi said that the G20 satellite mission will prove beneficial for the entire humanity like the data obtained from India’s successful Chandrayaan mission.

India brought Biofuels Policy in 2009: National Biofuels Policy was launched in India in 2009. It was revised in the year 2022 and the target of 20 percent ethanol blending petrol has been set by 2025. The target of 10% ethanol blending was achieved five months in advance in June 2022.

Sustainable biofuels deployment will accelerate: The Global Biofuels Alliance mirrors the International Solar Alliance launched by New Delhi and Paris in 2015 to bring clean and affordable solar energy within reach of all. India’s proposal for a Global Alliance on Biofuels among the G20 group will help accelerate sustainable biofuel deployment in support of the global energy transition.
