From the age of marriage to the rules of divorce… know what are the provisions in the UCC draft in Uttarakhand.

The committee constituted by the Uttarakhand government to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has handed over the draft documents to CM Pushkar Singh Dhami today i.e. on Friday. Chairperson of the five-member committee and former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai submitted the draft of the UCC to Chief Minister Dhami. It is noteworthy that a four-day special session of Uttarakhand Assembly has been called from February 5 to pass the bill on UCC. The draft will also be discussed in the state cabinet before presenting it as a bill in the Assembly. In his address on this occasion, the Chief Minister said that during the 2022 assembly elections, his party had promised the public that UCC would be implemented first as soon as the new government is formed.

10 percent people gave their opinion – CM Dhami

Talking to the media, CM Dhami said that the committee has submitted a report of about 749 pages along with the draft of UCC in four volumes. It will be presented in the state assembly for discussion on February 6. CM Dhami said that UCC is the first such program in the country in which the opinion of about 10 percent of the families of the state was taken and their views were compiled. Dhami said that a web portal was also created to gather people’s opinion. 2.33 lakh people gave their views in the portal and thus the views of about 10 percent of the families of the state were included in it. Expressing his gratitude to the committee, the Chief Minister said that its members worked very hard and collected people’s views by visiting various places. Dhami said that the committee also held 72 meetings to prepare the draft.

Will move forward towards making law soon- CM Dhami
CM Dhami said that the formalities regarding making UCC a law will be completed soon. He said that the draft will be legally examined and studied. After this it will be discussed. The draft of UCC will be placed in this specially called session of the Assembly. CM Dhami said that we will move forward in the direction of making a law. Bringing the bill on UCC was one of the major promises made by the BJP to the public in the 2022 assembly elections. In the first meeting of the Cabinet immediately after the formation of the government in March 2022, the formation of an expert committee to prepare the draft of the UCC was approved.

These could be the provisions
According to media reports, these provisions can be kept under UCC. Under this, registration of dispute will be mandatory. At the same time, the same reasons and grounds for divorce will be available. Husband and wife will have equal rights to divorce. Polygamy will be banned. Declaration of live-in relationship will have to be given. It will be mandatory to give self declaration. Girls will also be given rights in succession. The age for marriage can be fixed at 21 years for boys and 18 years for girls. The second marriage will be managed while the husband and wife are alive.
