From making friends to personality development, know what first year students expect from DU

Delhi University: Delhi University (DU) began its new academic session on Wednesday (August 16) with 64,288 students taking admission after the first and second rounds of seat allotment. DU is one of the most prestigious universities in the country and CUET is one of the better options for students. Talking about new beginnings, some of the first year students share their perspective, how they feel and what are their expectations from college. How was the experience of the first day of college for them?

du is like heritage and dream

DU is a dream for many students, especially those from humanities stream, one of them is Das from Guwahati. Das is a first year BA (Hons) Political Science student at Miranda House. Some of his teachers and seniors have been alumni of the university. He told that as soon as I entered the college, I saw the iconic red brick building and I was completely taken aback. This building is home to many stories and heritage, of which I am now a part. I want to live up to it and take it forward with me.

Studying in DU is the dream of the students.

Mahi Pincha from Jorhat who is a commerce student told that studying in DU was a dream which she started pursuing since class 8. Many things changed in his life but one thing which remained constant was his dream of joining Delhi University. Pincha has taken admission in B.Com (Hons) at Shri Ram College of Commerce. On the other hand, Aradhana Bardhan from Bhubaneswar, Odisha liked the DU curriculum and heard a lot about the faculty and culture from her alumni friends. Bardhan is currently pursuing BA English (Hons) from St. Stephen’s College.

first day in college experience

As we all know, the first days are usually full of setting, introduction, novelty and a little nervousness. Sharing his point Das said that my first day was very good “We were welcomed by our seniors with rangoli and warm wishes. I was very emotional as I always dreamed of studying here. After the welcome, we were greeted by Shri Ganesh, the teachers gave us a brief introduction to the syllabus, rules and regulations. The seniors told us about the qualities that would help us in life as well as during college- punctuality, leadership and teamwork.

75% attendance mandatory

The day began with the principals and heads of various departments sharing their knowledge and giving information about the college, says Pincha. They told us about the changes in the rules and regulations, especially since NEP 2020, like the time to appear for the exams. 75% attendance is compulsory. Initially I was very excited and nervous, I met new people, I also made some friends. After the orientation was over, we were asked to go to our allotted rooms. An assistant professor was on hand to guide us on what was expected of us and how to attend our classes, find our rooms, and navigate our way through college. Then, we were given water and allowed to interact with each other and explore the college.

I’m here to dress up

“Unlike in school, I hope the classes will be more interactive, focus will be on our ideas rather than rote learning,” says Sukanya Gogoi, from a small town called Bokakhat in Assam. Gogoi is a BA (Hons) English graduate from St Stephen’s College are studying.

Pincha says “I expect very good friends, teachers and sociable professors and people who can guide us and the college to provide ample opportunities for all round development. BA (Hons) Sociology student at Maitreyi College Saumya Yadav said. “I want to explore my opportunities here, develop my personality in DU and participate in extra-curricular activities. Yadav hails from Amethi and did his class 11 and 12 studies in Lucknow.

‘Want to be a part of clubs and societies’

Clubs and societies are an integral part of college life, it is not only a part of extra-curricular activities but also gives an opportunity to the students to pursue their interests and hobbies. They help them grow as individuals and connect with other students with similar interests. Film or cinema clubs as well as dance clubs are quite popular among students.

“Since I am doing BA (Hons) English, I am automatically a part of the literary society,” says Bardhan. “I want to join film/cinema club and dance club. I hear college is very busy and eventful. Apart from this, the literary festival is huge, I am looking forward to it.

Das shares “I am very interested in English debating society as I have actively participated in school debates. And, in English Dramatics Society, in school, I used to write scripts. I am a big fan of films. I am very interested in art films. I wrote an essay for Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition-2021, Silver Medal. Yadav said, “I would like to join dance and singing clubs.”

From research, civil service to financial analyst, students have eyes full of dreams and hearts full of dedication to fulfill them. Many students want to do their post graduation from abroad or from the university itself before doing anything.

Das said “I am very fond of research and diplomacy. I want to do policy-making and maybe go abroad for further studies, but either way, I am coming back and working for India,” Sukanya and Soumya said as they prepare for the civil services exam. While Aradhana wants to become a social worker. Bardhan says “I want to do post graduation in English or social work and eventually become a social worker. Right from my childhood, my mother has brought me up with a lot of sympathy and this is something I agree with and I look forward to I am also planning to do the same.

Pincha is sure that he will become a financial analyst. “I will start taking classes for Common Admission Test (CAT) preparation from second year onwards, but I will also sit for placements at SRCC. My aim is to become a financial analyst,” This year, DU offered seats to 1,05,426 students in the first and second rounds, out of which 64,288 students have confirmed their admission. While many students appeared for the orientation on the first day While some students still have not joined the college.
