Civil Judge Junior Division Jyotsna Rai (29) committed suicide in her official residence in Badaun. When the employees reached his residence for work in the morning, he knocked on the door. Called him several times but there was no response. The employees informed the judge and Kotwali police living nearby. The police broke the door of his residence and informed his family members. His parents reached the spot at around 5.30 pm. According to the police, a suicide note has also been recovered from his room. In which he has talked about performing the last rites on the banks of Saryu river. The woman judge, during her posting in Badaun, had mentioned about taking a residential plot in Ayodhya to a colleague. Seeing this intention being unfulfilled, perhaps he has written in the suicide note that the last rites will be performed on the banks of Saryu. Jyotsna Rai’s father Ashok Kumar Rai, originally a resident of Taraidih village in Tehsil Ghosi of Mau, was posted in Ayodhya two decades ago as Assistant Prosecution Officer. At that time Jyotsna Rai was five years old and lived here with her father. When he was selected in the Uttar Pradesh Judicial Service in the year 2018, his father was posted here on the post of Joint Director of Prosecution. On 15 November 2019, his first place of work was Ayodhya and his attachment to this place deepened further. Till April 12, 2021, he served as Additional Civil Judge Junior Division, Judicial Magistrate First from April 13 to July 4, 2022, and Additional Civil Judge Junior Division from July 5, 2022 to April 28, 2023. Due to his simple behavior and gentle personality, he had a good reputation among senior officers and litigants.

Attachment to Ayodhya has not diminished

Meanwhile, even when he was transferred to Badaun, his attachment to Ayodhya did not diminish. She remained in constant touch with her colleagues through phone. Seeing the divine and grand ceremony of Shri Ram Lalla’s life dedication on 22 January, he also resolved to reside in Ayodhya on the same day. He had mentioned this to one of his colleagues over the phone but Honi had something else in mind. On Saturday, he breathed his last in Badaun and his dream of living here remained unfulfilled. It was also discussed among the colleagues attending the funeral that perhaps it was because of this attachment to Ayodhya that he might have expressed his desire to perform his last rites on the banks of Saryu.

Father lodged FIR

In the case of the death of female judge Jyotsna Rai, her father Ashok Kumar Rai has filed an FIR for the murder of his daughter. The father said that my daughter cannot do this. She used to give justice to others. He did not commit suicide. Someone has killed him and hanged him, so that it looks like suicide. Based on the father’s complaint, the police have registered an FIR for murder against an unknown person. Jyotsna’s father Ashok Kumar Rai said in his complaint that his daughter lived alone in a government house. On the night of 2 February, he talked happily to his mother. There is no reason why she would commit suicide. I suspect that someone has killed and hanged my daughter. Jyotsna Rai’s brother Himanshu Shekhar Rai is an engineer in Railways. Sitting dejectedly outside the postmortem house, Himanshu said that Jyotsna’s family name was Juhi. Today she was going to see the land with her mother in Lucknow. We don’t know why or how this happened? Had we known anything, I would have left my job and been with my sister. During this time, when Himanshu was asked whether it was suicide or murder? In response to this he said that we do not know anything and are not in a position to say anything right now. Our sister is no longer in this world. Just having difficulty accepting this.
