The government is running an awareness campaign to reduce road accidents, but despite all efforts, no positive results are visible. Action against those violating traffic rules has intensified. In Patna alone, challans worth Rs 22 crore have been issued to people in three months for not wearing helmets. Despite this, people are losing their lives in road accidents. According to NCRB data, there were 9553 road accidents in Bihar in the year 2021, which increased to 10801 in the year 2022. Whereas in Patna, 275 people died in the year 2022. There was a 28 percent reduction in road accidents in Patna. In the year 2022, most of the accidents occurred due to bike and car. There were 3606 deaths in bike accidents while 556 people lost their lives in car accidents. There were 213 deaths from trucks, 106 from buses, 473 from tractors and 545 from autos. In urban areas, the maximum number of deaths occurred from bikes at 83 and from autos at 30.

Bihar has the highest number of accidents near religious places in the country.

If we look at the latest data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 10 thousand 801 road accidents in Bihar, in which 8 thousand 898 people lost their lives. In the statistics, Bihar’s graph is outside the top 10, but the highest number of accidents near religious places in the country occurred in Bihar. Of these, 2995 people died. In 2022, there were 2258 deaths in road accidents near religious places in rural areas of Bihar. Of these, 1791 were men and 467 were women. This figure is the highest in the country. After this, there were 686 deaths in Uttar Pradesh, 525 in Jharkhand and 340 in Madhya Pradesh. At the same time, 737 deaths occurred in road accidents near religious places in urban areas. Of these, 536 are men and 201 are women. In terms of accidents, Bihar is followed by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Highest number of deaths in road accidents in Bihar is on NH

According to the NCRB report, most of the deaths in road accidents in Bihar occurred on national highways. Seven thousand 68 people also got injured in accidents. According to the data of accidental deaths and suicides in the country during 2022 released by NCRB, an increase of 13.1 percent was recorded in road accidents in Bihar in 2022 as compared to the year 2021. According to the report, in 2022, a total of 2258 people (male-1791 and female-467) lost their lives in road accidents near religious places in rural areas of the state. This is the highest in the country. This is followed by Uttar Pradesh (686), Jharkhand (525), Tamil Nadu (506), Madhya Pradesh (340) and Maharashtra (321).

Most accidents near religious places in Bihar

The report said that in 2022, a total of 737 (male 536 and female 201) people lost their lives in accidents that occurred near religious places in urban areas in various districts of the state. This is also the highest in the entire country. After this comes Uttar Pradesh (487), Madhya Pradesh (308), Maharashtra (284), Telangana (278). A total of 8,898 people died and 7,068 were injured in 10,801 road accidents recorded in 2022 across the state, while 9,553 accidents were recorded in 2021. Bihar stood at 13th place in the country in cases of road accidents, whereas in 2021 it was at 15th place.

56 percent accidents in Bihar due to speeding

The report said that 56 percent of the accidents were due to speeding, in which 4,868 people died, while 34.7 percent of the accidents were due to dangerous and careless driving. In Bihar, 43 people lost their lives in accidents due to drunken driving. Prohibition law was implemented in Bihar in April 2016, under which the manufacture, sale or consumption of liquor was banned. The report said that out of the total 8,898 deaths, 3,926 deaths occurred on national highways and 2,032 deaths occurred on state highways. To reduce accidents on National Highways, Bihar has already initiated the process of setting up a dedicated ‘Highway Patrol Force’, which will be deployed on National Highways in the state.
