EOU exposes gang involved in fraud through customer care number

Economic Offenses Unit of Bihar Police (EOU) has exposed a gang committing cyber fraud across the country by posting numbers matching the customer care numbers of well-known companies on the Google search engine. EOU has arrested two gang members Vikas Ranjan and Suraj Kumar from Patna on the basis of tower location. Vikas is a resident of West Lohanipur in Patna while Suraj Kumar is a resident of Laheri in Bihar Sharif. 17 mobile phones, 15 debit cards, 15 Aadhar cards, laptops, passbooks of more than ten banks and a Swift Dezire car have also been recovered from the two arrested youths.

Fraud was being done by using similar customer care numbers.

According to EOU, continuous complaints of online fraud were being received on cyber crime reporting portal 1930. After verification, investigation was done and it was found that an organized gang was committing cyber fraud by using numbers similar to customer care numbers of Capital First, Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, Bandhan Bank, IDFC Bank and Flipkart etc. Around 190 such complaints have been registered so far on the cyber portal from across the country. A case related to this is already registered in the cyber police station of Patna.

EOU is conducting raids to arrest other members

EOU officials said that continuous raids are being conducted to arrest the arrested Vikas and other members on the behest of Suraj. The mobile and bank accounts recovered from the criminals are also being investigated. The deposited amount is being ascertained by seizing bank accounts.

EOU will also investigate the case under money laundering law

The property acquired by criminals will also be investigated under the Money Laundering Act. For this, action will be taken under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

How did you cheat?

According to the EOU, the criminals of the organized gang used to activate SIMs of numbers similar to the customer care numbers of the said companies and banks. After this, these numbers were put in Google search engine which people used to consider as real customer care numbers. When customers searched for customer care number on Google in case of any problem related to the concerned bank or company, they would see the numbers of fraudsters. Common people would call cyber fraudsters mistaking it for real customer care number and ask for help and then become victims of fraud.
