Ekadashi 2024: The eleventh date of Krishna and Shukla Paksha of every month of the year is called Ekadashi. Ekadashi is a word taken from Sanskrit language, which means ‘eleven’. Ekadashi comes twice in every month. One in Shukla Paksha and the other in Krishna Paksha. The Ekadashi that comes after the full moon is called Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha and the Ekadashi that comes after Amavasya is called Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha. Ekadashi of each side has its own significance.

Importance of Ekadashi

According to the Puranas, Ekadashi is also known as ‘Hari Din’ and ‘Hari Vasar’, this fast is celebrated by both Vaishnav and non-Vaishnav communities. Ekadashi fast gives more results than Havan, Yagya, Vedic rituals etc. There is also a belief of observing this fast that by this the ancestors attain heaven. The importance of Ekadashi fast has also been mentioned in Skanda Purana. Whoever observes this fast, consumption of wheat, spices and vegetables etc. is prohibited on the day of Ekadashi. Devotees start preparations for Ekadashi fast a day before i.e. from Dashami itself. On the day of Dashami, devotees wake up early in the morning and take bath and on this day they eat food without salt.

Ekadashi fasting rules

The rules for observing Ekadashi fast are very strict, in which the person fasting has to keep fast from the first sunset of Ekadashi till the next sunrise of Ekadashi. A person of any gender or any age can observe this fast voluntarily. People who want to observe Ekadashi fast have been told to follow some important rules from the day of Dashami Tithi. From the day of Dashami itself, devotees should not consume food items like meat, fish, onion, pulses (lentils) and honey. One should observe complete celibacy, staying away from pleasures and pleasures at night. Do not use a wooden toothbrush to brush your teeth in the morning on the day of Ekadashi, instead chew lemon, blackberry or mango leaves and clean your throat with your finger.

Ekadashi fasting food

According to the scriptures, devotees can use these items and spices in their fasting food on the day of Ekadashi. Fresh fruits, dry fruits, sugar, buckwheat, coconut, olives, milk, ginger, black pepper, rock salt, potatoes, sago, sweet potatoes etc. The food during Ekadashi fast should be satvik. Some people observe this fast without drinking water, which is known as Nirjala Ekadashi.

What not to do on Ekadashi?

  • Do not pluck leaves from trees on Ekadashi tithi.

  • Don’t get your hair cut.

  • Try to speak at least. Do not insult anyone on this day.

  • Consumption of rice is also prohibited on the day of Ekadashi.
