G-20 Summit: The top leaders of the world, including the G-20, gathered in India for the G20 summit and stressed on tackling various challenges facing the world, including the climate front. In this context, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that G20 leaders came together for the first time 15 years ago to restore global growth after the financial crisis. “We meet at times of great challenge – the world is once again looking to the G20 to provide leadership,” he said. Need for global campaign against climate change – Brazil
In this context, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that during his country’s G-20 presidency, a task force will be created for the global campaign against climate change. He said, we want to reach COP 30 in 2025, with a balanced climate agenda between mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage and financing, ensuring the sustainability of the planet and the dignity of people. He said that Brazil expects everyone’s participation in this so that the beauty of the Earth does not remain only a picture taken from space.
Developing economies are bearing the brunt of climate change – Ramaphosa
Here, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said, we are happy that the G-20 has accepted the African Union as a member of the group. He said that global reconstruction in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic provides a unique opportunity to achieve low-carbon goals, tackle climate change and move towards building sustainable societies. He said that developing economies, despite being the least responsible for this crisis, are bearing the brunt of climate change.
President Cyril Ramaphosa also said that as African and other developing economies, we bear the burden of meeting our climate commitments amid significant challenges such as poverty, inequality and unemployment. He said that South Africa calls for enhanced and expanded global partnerships for sustainable development. He said this should be supported by concrete policies and actions outlined in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development.
Climate change is man-made, solution is necessary- Indonesia
Indonesian President Joko Widodo said that before joining the leaders of G-20 countries and heads of international organizations, we posed for a group photo. Widodo said that in the G20 I have invited leaders to join the call for global carbon pricing. In a more fragmented world, the G20 has an important role as a forum to address global challenges.
