Five friends who had come to visit the fair in Deoria’s Barhaj on Sunday were taking bath in the Saryu river at Sant Ravidas Ghat. While bathing in the river, four friends and a relative all started drowning when they went into deep water, seeing which people started making noise. The sailor and diver present on the river bank saved four, while Abhay Vishwakarma (12), son of Nandlal, a class 8 student of Mishrauli-Tarauli village of Bhaluani police station area, died. Police reached the spot after receiving the information, took possession of the body and sent it for postmortem and informed the family members. There was silence in the village after getting information about the incident. There was crying and fighting in the house.

On the day of Ashtami fast of Shardiya Navratri festival, Balwant Yadav (12) son of Markandey, resident of Barauli, Raj (14) son of Ramjeet, Shivam (16) son of Dinesh of Karjahan, Kanhaiya (22) son of Ashok and Mishrauli, resident of Saraya of Deoria who came from relatives. Abhay of Tarauli had come to take bath in Barhaj river along with visiting the fair. All five were taking bath at Sant Ravidas Ghat. Meanwhile, they went into deep water and everyone started drowning. Seeing this some people started making noise. After this the people nearby gathered. Some people jumped into the river. After a lot of effort, people took out four, while Abhay could not be traced.
Abhay was the youngest among the brothers and sisters.
On information, Inspector Jitendra Singh and Town Incharge Sadanand Yadav along with their colleagues reached the river and started doing rescue. After about two and a half hours, Abhay trapped in the net was taken out. He was taken to CHC, where doctors declared him dead. SDM Awadhesh Kumar Nigam and Naib Tehsildar Ramesh Gupta reached the river bank and took information about the incident. CO Barhaj Rajesh Singh said that five people started drowning while taking bath. Four people were saved in this. Whereas Abhay died due to drowning. There was an uproar among the family members after getting information about their son’s drowning. Abhay Vishwakarma was the fourth among two brothers and two sisters.
