Dengue patients are not getting platelets, most of the blood banks in Patna run out of stock

Report: Anand Tiwari

Patna. So far, about 120 people have been infected with dengue in the capital. Currently, 13 infected people are being treated in dengue wards of PMCH, IGIMS, NMCH and private hospitals of the city. But it is a matter of concern that there is a shortage of platelets in the blood banks of the government hospitals of the capital. During investigation, BollywoodWallah found out that there is no platelets in the blood banks of Jayaprabha and NMCH of the city. Whereas PMCH has only 47 units i.e. three days’ stock left. Similarly, IGIMS will run for 36 units which will run for five days. In the same sequence, only four days’ stock is left in AIIMS hospital. But even in these hospitals, there is no guarantee that platelets will be available to the patients on time.

If the number of patients increases, the situation may become more serious.

According to experts, these days the number of admitted patients is less as compared to the number of patients. Of these, till now only half a dozen dengue patients have needed platelets. If the number of patients increases and the condition of blood banks remains the same, then problems may increase in the coming days. Due to lack of platelets, people seriously infected with dengue die every year. According to experts, platelets are not being supplied due to the decrease in the number of donors in the city.

Platelets are not available without donor, not even updated on portal

All government blood banks including Red Cross, PMCH, IGIMS of the city are not giving platelets to patients without a donor. Many such cases have come to light. While there is a provision to give platelets to a patient admitted in a government hospital even without a donor. On the other hand, if sources are to be believed, sometimes platelets also expire. Because the duration of platelets lasts only for five days. On the other hand, till now the information of platelets available on the e-blood fund portal is not being given online by the total 22 government and private blood banks operating in the district. While the Health Department has given instructions to give online information from blood to platelets on the e-Raktkosh portal.

Platelets start decreasing rapidly in dengue fever.

Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Superintendent of Gardiner Road Hospital, told that after dengue fever, the number of platelets starts decreasing rapidly in the patient’s body. He told that due to infected blood, platelets also start getting infected. These infected platelets start destroying healthy platelets rapidly. Doctors only increase the number of healthy platelets during treatment. The number of platelets should be between 1.5 lakh to 4.5 lakh. If it is more or less than this, the patient’s condition may become serious.

What are the symptoms of dengue fever?

High fever, headache, body pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the eyes, fatigue, lethargy, knee pain, red spots on the body, bleeding from the nose are all symptoms of dengue. On seeing these symptoms, immediately go to the doctor and get the platelets count checked. Dengue symptoms usually start four to six days after infection and can last up to 10 days. Keep in mind that do not consume medicines at all without the advice of the doctor.

they say

Civil surgeon Dr. Shravan Kumar says that in view of the increasing cases of dengue, instructions have been given to all hospitals and blood banks to keep stock of blood and platelets. There is a provision to give platelets even without a donor in government hospitals. Besides, data of blood and patients has to be given daily on the portal. If you are not doing this then it is wrong. At the same time, there is a demand from the relatives of our patients that they must bring at least one donor with them.
