Demolition, arson bombing near Risda station late night, trains stopped at various places in the main line

The violence that broke out on Sunday after stone pelting on a religious procession in Risda in Hooghly district is not taking the name of stopping. Despite the heavy deployment of security personnel on Monday, late night there was a ruckus near Risda station. Two groups came face to face. Along with stone pelting, many vehicles were set on fire. Bombs were also thrown. There is also news of firing. Till late night the police was struggling to control the situation. Leaving lathicharge and tear gas shells, the police was trying to control the situation. The uproar had not stopped till the news was written. In view of the situation, the Railways suspended the train service on the Howrah-Burdwan main line after 10 pm. Due to this, trains were standing at many places.

On the other hand, prohibitory orders continued in some areas of violence-hit Hooghly district on Monday and internet services remained suspended overnight. On Monday, the police stopped BJP state president Sukant Majumdar from entering Risda. Police said the situation in Risda and Shrirampur areas of Hooghly district, which had witnessed violent clashes during Ram Navami processions on Sunday, was peaceful and under control during the day on Monday. The BJP State President Sukant Majumdar being stopped from Risda drew a strong reaction from the BJP and demanded immediate deployment of central forces in the area.

The BJP leader told reporters, ‘I am not being allowed to meet my injured party workers. Police is citing prohibitory orders. The police can at least allow Mahto and me to enter. The police do not want to allow me because they want to hide the truth. Mazumdar was with BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahto. Majumdar demanded immediate deployment of central forces. Mahto also had a heated argument with the policemen.

On the other hand, the Chandannagar Commissionerate Police has arrested 12 people in connection with the clash between two groups in Risda on Sunday. Internet service is expected to remain closed till Monday night. Tension is still prevailing in the area. People are being forbidden to come out of their houses by miking on behalf of the police. Barricades have been installed at two places on GT Road. Vehicles are being searched by installing barricades in Mahesh area in Srirampur and near Konnagar. Police patrolling continues. RAF personnel are deployed.

The local people have welcomed such police action. Local people allege that outsiders were involved in the Ram Navami procession. These people escaped by inciting violence. There is no history of riots in Risda. It is noteworthy that on Sunday, a Ram Navami procession was organized under the leadership of BJP’s National Vice President Dilip Ghosh. The incident of stone pelting took place when the rally reached in front of Risda’s Wellington Jute Mill. Many people were injured in the incident. The condition of one of the injured is very critical.
