Delhi Excise Policy Case: Hearing on Arvind Kejriwal’s petition in SC on April 15

Delhi Excise Policy Case: After getting a setback from the Delhi High Court on 9 April, Arvind Kejriwal had approached the Supreme Court on 10 April. Delhi High Court, while rejecting Kejriwal’s petition, had said that investigation cannot be conducted separately against a common man and a special person. The court had made a strong comment and said that it could not accept Kejriwal’s argument that he was arrested because of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The court also said that this issue should not be seen in the context of time, but only in the context of law.

what is the matter

It is noteworthy that this case is related to alleged corruption and money laundering in preparing and implementing the Excise Policy of Delhi Government for 2021-22. The related policy was later cancelled. The Enforcement Directorate had arrested Kejriwal on March 21, hours after the High Court refused to grant him protection from punitive action by the anti-money laundering agency. He was sent to judicial custody on April 1 after being produced in the lower court at the end of the Enforcement Directorate’s custody period.

Kejriwal termed his arrest as an ‘unprecedented attack on the principles of democracy’

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in his petition filed in the Supreme Court, termed his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case related to excise policy before the general elections as an unprecedented attack on the principles of democracy. Kejriwal has requested the Supreme Court to declare the case against him illegal and release him.

Court expressed displeasure over the petition demanding removal of Kejriwal from the post of Chief Minister

Earlier on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court had expressed displeasure over the repeated petitions filed after the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal demanding his removal from the post of Chief Minister. The court said that once it has disposed of the issue and it falls within the domain of the executive, the suit should not be filed again and again as this is not a James Bond film which will have ‘sequels’. The petitioner, who had sought Kejriwal’s removal from the post, criticized former AAP MLA Sandeep Kumar and said he would impose a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.
