Deepfake Advisory: Government issued advisory on deepfake, said this to social media platforms

Deepfake Advisory: Amid growing concerns over video manipulation, ‘deepfakes’ and the spread of misinformation through Artificial Intelligence (AI), the government has issued an advisory to all online platforms to comply with information technology rules. According to an official statement, this advisory states that digital and social media platforms acting as intermediaries should provide clear and accurate information to the users about the prohibited content specified under the Information Technology (IT) rules. According to the statement, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued an advisory to all intermediary companies to ensure compliance with the existing IT rules.

Related to growing concerns about the spread of misinformation

This advice is the result of discussions held by Minister of State for IT Rajiv Chandrashekhar with the mediators. These instructions are specifically related to the growing concerns regarding the spread of misinformation with the help of AI and deepfakes. The Ministry has said in its advisory that under the IT rules, users should be clearly and accurately informed about the content which is not allowed. This should also be clearly explained to the users when they register for the first time. According to the advisory, digital platforms should ensure that users are informed about penal provisions such as the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the IT Act, 2000. Additionally, the terms of service and user agreements of online platforms should clearly state that intermediaries/platforms have an obligation to report legal violations to law enforcement agencies under relevant Indian laws.

It will be the responsibility of online platforms to…

Online platforms will have an obligation to prevent users from hosting, displaying, uploading, modifying, publishing, transmitting, storing, updating or sharing any information related to prohibited content on digital intermediaries. Make appropriate efforts. Deepfake means manipulating the content available on the internet and misrepresenting it. In this, digital manipulation is done through artificial intelligence to misrepresent or impersonate any person. Recently, an attempt was made to target some film personalities with the help of deepfakes. In view of the public concern spread by this, the government has issued an advisory in this regard.
