The deep pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has transformed into a cyclone on Monday evening. However, it will not have any major impact on the Indian coast. Information in this regard has been given by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This cyclonic storm will be known by the name ‘Hamoon’ which has been given by Iran, whose mild effect is visible in Jharkhand, the weather here has changed.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the deep pressure area over the Bay of Bengal moved northwards at a speed of 14 kilometers per hour during the last six hours and turned into a cyclonic storm. He said that at 5.30 pm on Monday, this low pressure system was located about 230 km away from Paradip coast of Odisha, 360 km south of Digha in West Bengal and 510 km south-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh. IMD said that it is likely to turn into an intense cyclonic storm over the north-western Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours.
The Meteorological Department said that this system is likely to cross the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong around 12 noon on October 25 as a deep depression. Meanwhile, the Odisha government has directed all district magistrates to be prepared to deal with any emergency. He has also asked the administration to evacuate people from low-lying areas in case of heavy rains. Meteorologist US Das said that this system (cyclone) will move into the sea about 200 kilometers away from the Odisha coast. Under its influence, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain at some places in coastal Odisha on Monday and at many places in the next two days.
IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the wind speed over the Bay of Bengal may gradually increase from 80-90 km per hour to 100 km per hour by Tuesday morning. He said that the possible cyclone will not have any direct impact on Odisha, but there may be damage to some Durga Puja pandals which are not built to withstand such high wind speeds.
According to the weather office, due to cyclonic winds, Odisha received about 15 mm of rain in the last 24 hours and light to moderate rain may continue in the coastal areas on Monday and Tuesday. According to the weather office, till 8.30 am on Tuesday, there may be heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) at one or two places in Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur. IMD has asked fishermen not to venture into west-central Bay of Bengal till Wednesday and near Odisha coast and north Bay of Bengal during Monday-Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in neighboring West Bengal, the weather department has predicted thunderstorm and moderate rain with lightning in parts of East Medinipur, Kolkata and South 24 Parganas districts on Monday and Tuesday. Keeping in mind the weather conditions, Durga Puja organizers have intensified preparations to deal with possible rain and strong winds during the festival.
