Cyber thugs harassed an elderly person using DeepFake, FIR registered

A case has come to light in Ghaziabad where cyber thugs used a ‘deep fake’ video of a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer to allegedly harass a 76-year-old man and bring him to the verge of suicide. A senior police officer gave this information. He said that an FIR has been registered in the matter and investigation has been started. Kavi Nagar Assistant Police Commissioner Abhishek Srivastava said that 76-year-old Arvind Sharma had bought a smartphone about a month ago and had created his Facebook profile on it. He received a video call on October 20, which he responded to. The woman making the call was ‘nude’ at that time. Srivastava told that after ending the call, problems started arising for Sharma. He started being sent pictures of the woman and the man with his face on them. Later he received a video call. The caller introduced himself as a senior police officer posted in Dwarka, Delhi and told him that he was being made an accused in a case of suicide by a woman.

Case is being registered and investigation is being done

Srivastava said quoting the complaint that Sharma was very frightened by this call and deposited Rs 24,000 in the bank account given by the alleged police officer. After that another 50 thousand rupees were given. But the demand for money kept increasing. He told that due to fear of public trouble and inability to arrange money, Sharma decided to commit suicide. However, he told this to his family members, who informed the police about the incident. The Assistant Commissioner of Police said, during the investigation, we came to know that the face of a retired IPS officer Prem Prakash was created using deep fake technology. In the video shared, Sharma was shown as a senior police officer posted in Dwarka. A case has been registered in this matter and investigation is being done.

Video of actress Rashmika Mandhana went viral

Deep fake is a technique through which a fake video is created by superimposing a person’s face on someone else’s body. It is very difficult for a common person to know from a video made through this technology that the video is fake. Recently, a similar video of South Indian film actress Rashmika Mandhana also went viral.

Used old video and changed its voice and background sound

Srivastava said that it seems that the accused had used an old video of retired IPS officer Prem Prakash and changed his voice and background sound. Upon closer inspection, it was found that the voice heard in the video and the lip movements were not matching. In such a situation, it can be called a ‘deep fake’ video. He told that a case has been registered in this matter on November 21 and investigation has been started. Ghaziabad Police has also written a letter to ‘Meta’ company for help in investigating the case. Also, the ‘deep fake’ video has been sent for forensic investigation.
