Emphasis on the need to identify hotspots
In the review meeting held on 7th April, Mandaviya requested the health ministers of the states to visit the hospitals and observe the rehearsals on the preparations on 10th and 11th April. In an online meeting with State Health Ministers and Principal and Additional Chief Secretaries, Mansukh Mandaviya stressed on the rising trends in cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI), increasing surveillance, testing and vaccination and increasing the number of hospitals. Emphasized the need to identify such emergency hotspots by ensuring infrastructure preparedness.

During the meeting the States and Union Territories were informed that at present the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified Variant of Interest (VOI) of the virus, XBB.1.5 and six other variants (BQ.1, BA.2.75, CH.1.1, XBB is closely monitoring XBF and XBB.1.16).
Request to increase participation of RT-PCR
Variant of Interest (VOI) of the virus are those forms in which initial scientific evidence of change has been found and which are spreading rapidly. It was also observed during the meeting that the testing rate in 23 states and union territories is less than the current national average of 100 tests per 10 lakh population. Mansukh Mandaviya had said that despite the advent of new forms of the virus, the strategy of following the five rules of investigation-surveillance-treatment-vaccination and Covid-appropriate behavior remains a tried and tested strategy for Covid-19 management. States and Union Territories were also requested to accelerate the rate of testing and increase the participation of RT-PCR in tests. (with language input)
