Sundarraj said that security forces were sent under Basaguda police station area as part of anti-Naxal operation. The operation involved personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force and its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action). He told that when the team reached the banks of Talperu river near Chipurabhatti village of the area, the Naxalites of Platoon No. 10 started firing on the security forces. After this the security forces also retaliated.

The police officer said that after the firing stopped, when the security forces searched the spot, bodies of six Naxalites including two women and a large quantity of weapons and explosives were recovered from the spot. The killed Naxalites have not been identified. He said that many other Naxalites were reported injured in the encounter. Search operation is going on in the area. Bijapur district is in Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, where voting will be held in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 19.
