Chhath Puja 2023: Glass only bamboo bahangiya, bahangi lakkat hai… Chhath, the great festival of folk faith, has become global.

Geeta Chaubey Goonj

Chhath Puja 2023: Even though the way of celebrating Chhath changed with time, the devotion kept increasing day by day. The worrying condition of rivers and ponds changed the direction of Chhath. Apartment culture found a different way. Even during the Corona period, Chhath fast could not be stopped. The people of our state have always been at the forefront in celebrating this tradition with the same devotion in foreign countries, due to whose efforts Chhath Puja has become global today.

People start humming this song as soon as the month of Kartik begins

As soon as the month of Kartik arrives, this song quickly takes hold on the lips. This song, filled with the fragrance of soil, fills every corner of the mind with sandalwood. I have been seeing, understanding and living Chhath since childhood. No matter how weak the body is, as soon as I remember the Chhath fast, some amazing divine power starts flowing in the mind and body, which I have not been able to know till date. This fast of fasting without water for 36 hours spreads a wave of sacred purity not only for the fasting person but also in the entire family and society. Every now and then, a stream of purity starts flowing in everyone’s heart, with whose sound the entire atmosphere resonates.

Hey bitch! tuhun goad rang

It would rarely happen that I stay in Ranchi and not celebrate Chhath. Earlier we used to go to rivers and ponds on foot. Babuji and Bhaiya would carry Daura on their head, banana on their elbows and reed on their shoulders and we mother and daughter would set out with a pot, carpet, firecracker etc. in our hands. Mother used to cross the entire distance without slippers and with her feet stuck to the Mahavar. She used to say to me – ‘You bitch! Tuhun God Rang La… Before marriage, I remember that only my mother used to observe the fast, but all of us used to support her with so much devotion that it seemed as if we too had observed the fast. While picking wheat, while grinding it in the mill at home… our lips kept humming Chhath songs in the morning and evening.

Chhath, the great festival of folk faith

On the day of ‘Nahay-Khay’, the ‘Pumpkin-Bhat’ prepared with rock salt and a splash of pure ghee had such a pure taste in it, which is not found in its preparation on ordinary days. Couldn’t even know this secret. After that, arranging for an earthen stove and mango wood to prepare the Prasad of Kharna… After eating rice and jaggery kheer and roti or puri, distributing it to everyone in the form of Prasad and then at the end, taking the Prasad yourself. There was a feeling of responsibility, which gave immense happiness to the mind. The sacred red line of vermilion from the nose to the forehead fills everyone with reverence.

Manauti also for daughters who are considered a burden

In the songs of Chhath, wishes and prayers are made for the entire family, relatives and even the daughters who were once considered a burden to the society. There is hardly any festival in the world in which there is a demand for a ‘runki-jhunki’ daughter! Watch this song-

All four hours of the night, sea and land,

Seila Charan Tohar Chhathi Maiya

Runki-Jhunki daughter Mangila

Yes Dinanath…

Padhal Panditwa son-in-law, O Chhathi Maiya…

Ho Dinanath darshan dihi aapn?

Even the setting sun is respected with reverence

Everyone salutes the rising sun, but Chhath fast is the only festival in which the setting sun is also respected with the same reverence, so that the next morning it can rise with full energy and energize the world! Sanatan Dharma has been worshiping nature since the beginning. In the form of such fasts and festivals, we express our gratitude towards all those components of nature with the help of which our life flourishes easily.

When the city changed, it seemed this chain would stop!

I still remember… about 30 years ago, for the first time after marriage, I observed Chhath fast at my in-laws’ house. Due to the practice of purdah in the village, going to the village canal in a veil and taking bath in the veil to offering Arghya, the entire process was performed with such devotion that everyone including my mother-in-law had only one thing on their lips – “The BA living in the city. My heart becomes happy by offering Suruj Baba’s water in the veil close to me….” They thought that I would have nothing to do with religion. Here I was thanking my mother, who had tied me with this strong thread of faith.

Chhath puja has become global

With time, things changed from city to city, but the plant of Chhath sprouted in the heart never withered. Even though the method changed, the faith kept increasing day by day. The worrying condition of rivers and ponds changed the direction of Chhath. Apartment culture found a different way. Since Chhath is a festival of community, we created an artificial pond on the roof of the community hall of the apartment. Keeping in mind the purity of Chhath, the flour mill workers made this fast a little easier by taking the responsibility of drying wheat and grinding flour. In this way, we collectively observed Chhath fast with full devotion and rituals. Even during the Corona period, Chhath fast could not be stopped. Chhath festival was linked to the arrangement of online puja material.

Chhath is celebrated with the same devotion in foreign countries also.

The people of our state have always been at the forefront in celebrating this tradition with the same devotion in foreign countries, due to whose efforts Chhath Puja has become global today. This year, when I shifted to Bengaluru, I thought that perhaps this chain of Chhath would be broken!

Happiness of going home in Chhath

My housework assistant asked for 20 days leave to go to Bihar for Chhath. I happily gave him leave along with some extra money to ‘offer Chhath Prasad on my behalf’. She left, but a bell of restlessness rang inside me that if she can go so far to Bihar to celebrate Chhath, then why not I call my state itself in Bengaluru! But I did not have the courage to observe this fast alone in an unknown city among unknown people. Due to the luck of the cat, the sneezing stopped, which I would call only the grace of Chhath Maiya. A message came from a group on WhatsApp that ‘This time a mass celebration of Chhath is going to be held in the presence of Gurudev Ravi Shankar ji at the Art of Living campus in Kanakapura, Bengaluru. Interested devotees can ensure their participation in this. Then what… We immediately filled the form. My heart rejoiced at this grace of God. In happiness, I also composed a Chhath Geet. I will sing it along with traditional songs. If I get a chance, I will tell it to Gurudev also.
