Car Care: How to check tire air in a running car?

Car Care: If you are driving a car at full speed on the highway, but your car is not giving the mileage it should. In such a situation, before doubting the performance of the engine or any part of the vehicle, you should check the tire pressure i.e. the air in the tyre. The problem is, how do you check tire air in a moving car? Will you have to park your car somewhere on the side for this? The answer to this is ‘no’. The reason for this is that in all the cars coming in the market nowadays, such a feature is given which even when the car is running at full speed on the highway, the driver is informed about the low air in the tyre. The name of this feature is Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Come, let us know how this feature of the car works even while running at full speed?

what is tpms

Tire pressure monitoring system i.e. TPMS is equipped with sensor, receiver and display unit. Its sensor is connected to the valve stem of the tyre. The valve stem is located inside the tire pressure valve. It is fitted in all four tires of the car. It works to measure the air pressure in tyres. This is called sensor. The data given by this sensor goes to the receiver through the wireless system and then the receiver sends that data to the display unit. As soon as you approach the data display unit, you get to know the actual condition of the air in the tyre.

Why is it important to have TPMS in the car?

It is very important to have TPMS installed as a feature in the car. This is the feature which gives information to the car driver about the actual condition of air in the tyres. Even when a car is running at full speed on a highway, the driver immediately gets information about low tire pressure. Its biggest advantage is that it avoids major accidents due to uneven air pressure in the tyres. Due to low pressure of any tire of the car, there is a high risk of any untoward incident. Along with this, the speed of the vehicle decreases and the pressure of the engine increases. Tire wear also increases due to low air pressure.

TPMS can be fitted externally in old cars

Now if someone has an old car and it does not have a feature like TPMS to check tire pressure, then it can be fitted from outside also. Car owners have the option to install it in their car using a retrofit kit. It can be installed by going to a mechanic. This also works in the same way as the inbuilt TPMS works in a new car.
