Calcutta High Court: The Calcutta High Court has ordered the state government to pay financial compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the family of a minor in connection with the death of a minor in police custody in the year 2020 at Mallarpur in Birbhum district. On Tuesday, a bench of Acting Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya gave this order. The bench has ordered a compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the family of the minor within 15 days.

The bench said that the West Bengal Juvenile Justice Act-2017 will have to be complied with by the police before taking legal action against any minor in future. In fact, on October 29, 2020, a 15-year-old minor resident of Mallarpur Belpada Khalasipada in Birbhum district was arrested by the police in connection with a theft.

Police told that he was kept in a room in the police station. His body was recovered from there on the second day. Many questions were raised about how the minor died. The local people had told that he was beaten up by the policemen inside the police station. After the incident, the Birbhum district police had presented the line to the sub-inspector and assistant sub-inspector of Mallarpur police station.

However, questions were also raised regarding the lack of action against the station in-charge. The BJP protested against this incident by taking to the streets. In this case, the High Court had summoned the report from the district police which was not satisfactory. In this case, now an order has been given to give financial compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the family of the deceased child.
