CAA: Hearing on CAA case was held in the Supreme Court. SC will now hold the next hearing on April 9

CAA: The petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) were heard in the Supreme Court today i.e. on Tuesday. The petitioners have demanded a ban on the implementation of CAA. People opposing CAA have called it religious division. At the same time, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Center on the petitions demanding a ban on the Citizenship Amendment Act- 2019 and the Citizenship Amendment Rules- 2024. The Supreme Court has asked the Central Government to file its reply by April 8. Now the hearing of this case will be on 9th April.

Center asked for time from the court

The Central Government sought time from the Supreme Court to file its reply on the petitions seeking stay on the implementation of the Citizenship Rules- 2024. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra that he needed some time to respond to the 20 applications. Tushar Mehta told the court that CAA does not take away the citizenship of any person. Due to this, no citizen of the country will lose his citizenship.

Supreme Court refuses to ban notification

According to media reports, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal demanded an immediate ban on CAA in the court. He argued that once someone is given citizenship under CAA, it would be very difficult to take it back. In such a situation, CAA should be banned now. However, on the appeal of the petitioners to stay the Citizenship Amendment Rules- 2024, the Supreme Court has not passed any order related to the stay.

What is the argument of the petitioners

The petitioners’ argument regarding CAA is that it discriminates on the basis of religion. They argue that under this law Muslims have been separated on religious grounds. It is noteworthy that since the implementation of the CAA law, many organizations including the opposition have strongly opposed it. Indian Union Muslim League stands against CAA. The league has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court.

Many political parties and leaders are protesting

Many parties have protested against CAA and have filed a petition against it in the Supreme Court. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, AIMIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi and many other organizations are standing against it.

Why is there an uproar regarding CAA?

A hearing is being held in the Supreme Court regarding CAA. Today i.e. on Tuesday, the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear the case on April 9. It is noteworthy that four years after this controversial law was passed in the Parliament, the Center implemented it on March 11. According to this law, there is a provision to give Indian citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants who came to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014. At the same time, the people protesting say that it discriminates on the basis of religion.
