The earthquake of 1934 was the most dreadful in the state. The earthquake of January 15, 1934 was devastating. Thousands of people had died during that time. Many people still tremble when that memory comes alive. The intensity of that earthquake was estimated at 8.4 on the Richter scale. According to the study of GSI, the maximum impact of that earthquake was in districts like Munger, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga. According to the official report, 1839 people lost their lives in Darbhanga due to earthquake in 1934. At the same time, the death toll in Munger was 1260. Whereas, 1583 people died in Muzaffarpur. Hundreds of houses were razed to the ground in the earthquake of 1934. Big houses were buried under the ground during that time. The entire state was shaken by the earthquake. A loud roar was heard in people’s ears. It is said that after the earthquake, Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Rajendra Prasad had come forward to help the people. Jamalpur station of Munger was completely destroyed due to the earthquake. The market here was reduced to debris. After this the construction work took years.
