BHU Foundation Day: Education from nursery to research takes place in Kashi Hindu University, this was the vision of Mahamana.

Kashi Hindu University, located in Varanasi, one of the oldest cities of the world, is going to celebrate its 109th foundation day today. According to mythological beliefs, the city of Kashi resting on the trident of Lord Shiva is the center point of religion and spirituality. There are so many achievements of this glorious university, which was established through donations. This is the university with the largest residential area in Asia. This university is the only institution which imparts education not only in science, arts, commerce but also in medical, engineering, agriculture and astrology. Besides, it is the only center of education providing education from nursery to research. This unique university consisting of five institutes, 16 faculties and 135 departments has seven schools from nursery to class 12th. When Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya had decided to establish this university, at that time there were 18 universities in the United States, 15 in France, 21 in Italy, 22 in Germany and 134 in America, whereas India, the most populous country, had that number. At that time there were only 5 universities. At that time schools were also few in number. Therefore, when Mahamana had prepared the plan of Hindu University, at the same time it had been decided that not only higher education but also elementary education would be provided here. For this purpose, Central Hindu School was made a part of this university. Mahamana and the school’s founder Annie Besant came together to fulfill the vision of the university. Central Hindu School is still known as the nucleus of the university. After the establishment of the university, classes were held in the Central Hindu College for the initial years.

Central Hindu School was first started

The history of the Central Hindu School associated with the university is older than BHU. BHU was established on 4 February 1916, whereas Central Hindu School was started by Annie Besant on 7 July 1898. This school was first started in a rented house in Karnaghanta with 15 teachers and 177 students. At that time, King of Kashi Prabhunarayan Singh gave a building to the school in Kamchha and it was shifted there in March 1899.

Interesting story of Nirma of BHU

The story of the construction of BHU is also very interesting. It is said about the construction of BHU that Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya went on and BHU was built. Madan Mohan Malviya had to face many difficulties in the construction of BHU. The British Raj also continuously increased their problems. Let us tell you that before the construction of BHU, the British government demanded Rs 1 crore from Darbhanga Naresh and Malviya ji. It was clearly said by the British government that first Rs 1 crore will be given and then permission will be given for the construction of the university. Then the biggest challenge was the space for the construction of the university. Then Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya had asked for donation of land from the King of Kashi for the construction of BHU. According to the information, Kashi Naresh agreed to donate the space for BHU. But a unique and strange condition was also placed in front of Malviya ji for this. The King of Kashi placed a condition that the amount of land that Malaviya ji would measure on foot in a day, he would get donated to the university. Mahamana also immediately agreed for this.

It is believed that after this, Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya kept walking on foot the whole day and measuring the place. The king of Kashi donated as much space as Malaviya ji could walk in the whole day and measure the space. The King of Kashi gave him the fruits of Malviya ji’s hard work. King of Kashi donated 11 villages, 70 thousand trees, 100 pucca wells, 20 kutcha wells, 860 kutcha houses and 40 pucca houses to Malviya ji for the construction of the university. Along with this, the King of Kashi also donated a temple and a dharamshala for the construction of BHU. After this, BHU could be constructed and the dreams of many great people like Darbhanga Naresh, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, Dr. Annie Besant and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan came true. Finally, on 4 February 1916, on the day of Basant Panchami, Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya laid the foundation of BHU. Today BHU is spread over 1360 acres and stands proudly and is making an important contribution to the development of India.
