Bengal: Trees fell due to strong winds due to Kalbaisakhi, many vehicles damaged

West Bengal: A Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) struck the southern districts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, this evening resulting in wind speed up to 84 kmph, uprooting several trees and damaging some vehicles. The police, however, said that there is no information about any injuries so far. The storm, recorded at the Alipore observatory in Kolkata, lasted for three minutes from 5.41 pm and had a maximum wind speed of 84 kmph, the Meteorological Department said.

Strong winds blew at a speed of 62 kmph

According to the Meteorological Department, Dum Dum in the northern part of the city had strong winds at a speed of 62 km per hour. These winds lasted for about 01 minutes at 6 pm. According to the Meteorological Department, apart from Kolkata, the nor’wester affected other districts of South Bengal including Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Howrah, Nadia and South and North 24 Parganas. Light to moderate rainfall occurred in various districts including Kolkata.

Roads blocked at some places due to fallen trees

Several trees were uprooted and some cars were damaged in the Maidan area near Victoria Memorial and Lake Garden area in South Kolkata due to Kalbaisakhi. Disaster Management Group personnel have been deployed to remove trees and clear roads. The nor’wester that occurred in the evening caused heavy traffic jams in the city as roads were blocked at some places due to fallen trees.
